Room too big for nice audio?
« on: 21 Sep 2007, 05:32 pm »
I may be moving into a new house with a huge bonus room- 25.2x21.2.  Wondering if these dimensions might be too much for my Odyssey Loreleis?
What's the general consensus on larger rooms and there impact on achieving well balanced sound?  Anybody have good results in a room of similar proportions as these?  Will I have to place the speakers 10 feet out away from the back wall?
Thanks.

Hi Jason.

Most people would kill to have that much space - provided it's laid out in such a way that you can set things up appropriately.  You won't need to pull things that far out but it does offer the opportunity to pull out both the speakers and seating and still have distance for the soundstage to devleop.

How high is the ceiling?

I agreey with Bryan...

Extra space gives you more options!

Now you just need some goodies from GIK!

The best system I've ever heard (many times) is lucky enough to be in a 23x20x10 "bonus" room with significant treatments.  Pics here and here.

Of course, the speakers in that room are big, efficient and driven by lots of power.  In addition, because the speakers are line arrays, the power loss per meter is half that of point source speakers (3 dB instead of 6 dB).  As a result, he can pressurize his room with ease.  Your Loreleis will face a somewhat steeper challenge pressurizing such a large room, but everyone else is correct... such a large room is a truly wonderful thing to have for an audio system, especially if treated!

(Of course, it also depends on the dB level at which you prefer to run your system.  Some people listen at higher levels than others.)

The biggest issue in a larger room with smaller (Loreleis aren't really small) is getting solid deep bass response.  They might surprise you though if you're driving them with a gutsy enough amp.

Thanks for the responses, I'm getting excited now  :thumb:
The house has 9' ceilings on the first and second floor but I think the bonus room has 8 ft ceiling.

there is no such thing as a room too big.  the best my rig ever sounded was when it was in a 26x38x8.5 room, that was open on each side to rooms w/similar cu/ft.  of course, you will not be able to energize a huge room with bass like a smaller room.  in that room, even a pair of vmps larger subs wouldn't energize the room.  but, the bass response & everything else was amazing!   :thumb:

of course, (imo), any speakers will be improved by a pair of subwoofers electronically crossed over, even in much smaller rooms.  so, enjoy your new room, & start saving for a subwoofer system!   :green:

I had a large 3-way speaker in the 80's.  Bass (8 inch woofers in two 6 cu. ft mass loaded transmission lines, rated to 114 dB at 17 Hz) was too much for any room I'd ever afford, but I wanted to see what they could do in such a room.  So I hauled them into a 20,000 cu. ft chapel (roughly 35 ft wide x 45 ft long x 13 ft high) and hooked them up to a NAD 3020 (20 wpc).  The sound brought tears to my eyes, it was amazing.  You can't believe how good organ sounded there.  I realized that I had too much speaker for my house, the bass had been so restricted.  It was like putting wild animals in a cage.  I donated them to the church on the spot.

Will you have two open corners?

I would love to try a pair of Klipschorns with some nice tube amplifcation in a room of that size. You may be pleasantly surprised at the results. Some of the most lifelike sound I ever heard from an audio system was from K horns and a flea powered Single Ended Triode in a large room such as yours.

At any rate, good luck, and happy listening.
