Pre-Orders for the April 6-11 begin today. All orders will be filled on a first come first serve policy. Alan will only be available for 3 weeks (March 25- April 16), I highly recommend if you are considering a AM design product to place the pre-order as soon as possible.

Note: Alan ususally doesn't like to work 3 or 4 days prior to hitting the road, not enough time to construct a custom filter, so it's likely he will cut off the order acceptance date around April 10-12.

I'm wondering how to determine where the best location for a Ref II would be. I know from Alan's and Jen's suggestion, one should listen to a standard PE plugged into each circuit in the house and choose one that sounds "neutral". However, how does one do this if you don;t have a spare PE? The reason I ask is the 2 standard PE's I own are plugged in already. If I unplug one of those to try to find where to put the Ref II, won't the fact that the standard PE is no longer in its prior spot change how everything sounds for the audition of the Ref II? Also, won't I then have to wait 2 weeks or so again to get back to my original sound when I return the PE to its original location once I'm done using it to identify bright and neutral circuits? If so, I that might make it hard to tell what effects are due to the Ref II and which are due to the PE being replaced and "re-tuning". Is it possible to use the Ref II to identify which circuit is best suited for the Ref II? If so, what should I listen for as I try the Ref II on different circuits? Sorry if these are dumb questions, I just want to make sure I get the Ref II in the right spot to hear what it can do, but I don't really want to have to unplug everything else and go through break-in on those again.

I'm writing with a couple more quick questions about the ESP filter units that Jen recommended. First, if my breaker feeding my dedicated audio duplex is 20amp, then you suggested getting a 30 amp ESP lab-grade unit. However, it appears that in the easy to use model with a cord and outlets, 20 amp is the highest they go. Would these mean I would get congestion/reduced dynamics if I used this unit to power my system (I have a 100 watt per channel class A power amp)? If so, how does one use the hard-wired filters, i.e., where do you wire those? Would I cut the power cord to my power conditioner and hard-wire the leads of the filter into the power cord, or is this filter supposed to install in the crawl space directly in the Romex feeding the duplex? Lastly, and this is likely a dumb question but I won;t know unless I ask, why does only one side of the filter have a ground lead?

The Reference II can be used the same way as the PE. Plug the Reference II in around the home on different circuits and see what sounds best. Allow the filter 30 minutes to 1 hour to initially set up to see if you like the added/enhanced sound quality. If you don't try a different location on another circuit. Make notes of the sound quality of each circuit for later reference for additional tuning filters. For example if circuit 1 sounds dark and circuit 2 sounds neutral during the listening tests with the Reference II, then I would recommend adding a PE to circuit 1 and a Reference II to circuit 2. Motor appliances, like the refrigerator, should still receive a PE II to help lower the mechanical noise and harmonic feedback. Microwave ovens should still receive a Reference I filter.

As long as the system draws less than 15 amps then the 20 amp plug in filter will be fine. If the system draws more than 15 amps then I highly recommend installing the wire-in to the power conditioner power cord. Pick yourself up a hobby box and use it to house the wire-in filter. Ask Alan when he comes home for install tips, he uses the filter in different scenarios.

The filter ground wire is not used to purify ground noise, it is required for the Y input configuration and surge protection. Ask Alan for tips on how to clean up ground noise, I'm on the phone with him right now, he said he would be more than happy to assist when he gets back.

"Hi Jen, saw your post elsewhere on AC. It looks like the power enhancer plugs into one outlet of a duplex...and the filtering effects all the power going to the receptacle, correct? I have a noise issue when my cable box and/or tv are plugged into my integrated amp. I bought a used BPT 1 10 outlet device...I think the sound is improved overall, but this hum still persists.

Sorry but I don't have access to Jen's PM account, she is out of town all of this week, in the meantime I can answer your question.

The PE series, Reference II, and Quantum series are all different levels of parallel filters. Your description is a ground loop hum created by the connecting interconnects. If it is the case of the incoming coax, then in most cases that can be lowered or corrected with a simple insulated ground wire / star wire application. I suggested going down to the local hardware store and purchasing 6 feet of insulated 12ga THHN stranded wire, a Leviton industrial grade 5266C ac plug, and a package of spade or round connectors. Wire the round connector at one end and the ac plug at the other end of the ground wire. Find a screw on the bottom or rear of the cable box that is attached to the metal chassis. Attach the round connector to this location, preferably close to the coax input. Plug the ac male into the BPT to star ground cable box. Two things should happen, 1. The hum should disappear or at banish where it is no longer noticeable, 2. The cable box is usually a mini radio station; if it is located in the same rack as the audio components you should notice lower noise via audio playback...the sound quality is usually warmer and more organic.

After that is completed I highly recommend 1 PE to be plugged into the BPT and a PE V S/AC to be plugged into the wall with the BPT power cord. This combination will dramatically improved the performance of the BPT audio and video quality

PE Quantum

The PE Quantum series takes component/system tuning to a new level. Based off the success and effectiveness of our original PE circuit, we decided to go back to the drawing board, redesign the filter series, and create a series of products that offer the absolute best performance/noise specs current technology has to offer in today’s market.

The original PE circuit was designed in 1998. Over a period of 24 months after we fine tuned the circuit like a musical instrument to be able to reproduce as close to the live event as possible in all environments, professional and consumer with a wide range of equipment. Alternating the strength of the filter circuit allowed us to extend the filter bandwidth and suppression distance up to hundreds of feet from the source. In 2001 the PE was offered to the pro audio industry as a tool to fine tune the electrical environment in the studio. In 2005 the original PE circuit was redesigned into the PE V. The PE V took approximately 18 months to develop and fine tune. The development of the PE V took parallel filtering to new level not previously offered in the pro/consumer audio industry. The PE V acted as a power reservoir / surrogate power supply for all component/s installed on the same circuit. To date the PE V is still our most successful design.

In late 2007 / early 2008 we began our most difficult project to date, in the early stages the Quantum project offered little improvement over the PE V series, the term quantum in the high-end audio industry became a buzz word for marketing making part selection difficult. After several months of R&D with disappointing results, we stumbled on 2 products that finally offered the specs we desired and allowed us to install the circuit into multiple systems/components resulting in superior results that we were not able to obtain using any other product we found on the market.

During the same project design period, summer 2008, we designed our new Active Quantum Technology (AQT) based on trickled down technology from the Quantum series. AQT quickly became a superior technology and allowed us to merge several design concepts into one product series.

Where would one use the new Quantum plug-ins? Could they be plugged into the dual-twist DIY power strip (your recipe) powering my system, or are they best elsewhere in the house? I already have the PE V-Pro Custom plugged into the duplex powering the power strip if that changes the answer at all.

The Studio Reference series was in production for a little over 10 years before I pulled the plug. The Reference Power Cable (Reference Collection) is still available and will be for the next several years as our mid level cable. The PE series Enhancer (PE Collection) will be available the middle of this month (best cable under $100). The upcoming Quantum cables (Quantum) will be available in July.
