Correct wire orientation can make all the difference when tuning a circuit using the PE method.

Hi: Just so that I am clear on this.... I have 6 duplex outlets in my listening area controlled by a single breaker and my plan was to install 6 PE's,each one going to the lower portion of each duplex. My existing 15 cent duplexes will not allow me to hook two wires to one screw ( I think it's "code" in Canada that each wire has to have it's own screw), so I will have to buy 6 Hubbell duplexes that allow for back and side wiring.... some duplexes now are using a "shared" wiring configuration, that being one hot(red) top and one hot (black) bottom feeding the next duplex in the line. Hopefully the better quality duplexes will have a two wire connection top and bottom! Is this the way all of the duplexes (6 in my case) should be wired to gain the proper effect using 6 PE's?! Thanks, Huck

What do you find confusing?  I'm not a web master so any tips you can offer would be helpful.

Carl-
I put the text in but it throws the page off.  There is only so much I can do with the Microsoft offering.  We would like to keep this type of stuff as low budget as possible to be able to pass the part quality and savings on to the customer.

Jen, If you want to send the photos to me, I will do this for you. Just include what you want (description) for each photo. I'm thinking of placing the description on the bottom of each photo, perhaps?

Let me know if I can help!

Huck-
It's not a code issue, it's a 15 cent outlet issue.  If you explore the local hardware store and look at the $5 and $10 duplex outlets you will see a major increase in build and material quality.

All the duplex outlets should be wired the same way if you plan on installing components into the same duplex outlet.

jmichael-
Thank you for your offer, I will ask Alan the next time he calls and see what he wants to do.  Please email me with all the info.

On another note, the Reference One has sold out for the month of May, thank-you very much.  We have a new batch of filters coming in early next week with a follow up order in the middle of the month.

I also have a couple PE V S/AC units still available at the introductory price is anyone is interested.  Offer ends June 1.

Thank-you.  My husband really tries to educate and push the hobby to it's full potential.  My job is to hold it all together when he is on the road :D

Tweak suggestion: 1 Shakti On-Line and 2 small dabs of Blu-tac is required for this tweak.  Pull the system wall duplex outlet out from the wall and install the On-Line down the rear middle (length) of the duplex.  Use the Blu-tac to adhere the On-Line to the outlet.  You should notice improvements in a matter of minutes.  The quartz inside the On-Line helps control the ringing character of the duplex outlet.  This is an excellent tweak for those using Hubbell outlets and PE products.  The On-Line offers excellent ringing control between 120KHz and 1.5GHz.  The Shakti On-Line tweak will help flesh out lower midrange resolution and enhance soundstage depth.

What is the cost of each of the 2 recommended Hubbell outlets? Where do you put each type? I know it's covered several threads back. Feeling lazy!

Jen,
do you think that Shakti on-line is too big to put it in the back of wall receptacle, not considering tight space in the outlet box?  I was wondering if i can wrap it on the wire itself since behind my listening room is the utility room where i can see wire comes from the main electric panel?

I have a bunch of PEs in the cheap wall outlets which i think i need to replace them with something like Hubbell though.

Also, i think i will put QSG (Quicksilver Gold) in all of PEs' blades.

thanks.

"Tip:

Now that you have located the brighter of the circuits the next thing you will notice is that some duplex outlets on the brighter circuit will sound better than others with the choke or PE installed.  The reason has to do with location on the circuit, proper polarity, and duplex quality.  I suggest trying each choke one at a time on each circuit duplex until you locate where it sounds best installed on that particular circuit.  The effect will be audible on the stereo circuit.

You could upgrade the duplex to a good quality brass outlet as a cheap tweak and increase the resolution provided by the choke application.  Audiophile outlets are not necessary or recommended.  The idea with this tweak is to use an outlet that sounds thin or rolled off in the bass because the choke already provides increased bass via increased inductance, the outlet could be used to dial in the correct type of bass provided by the choke application.  Brass outlets roll off the bass to increase low level resolution, articulation, and impact/foundation.

Recommended Outlets:

Hubbell HBL-5262
Hubbell HBL-8200 non-plated (Al Porter sells non-plated 8200 and 8300 series on AudiogoN)

the Hubbell HBL-5262 is excellent for the Hammond 193M choke, but not so great for the 193L.  The 193L sounds very good with the Hubbell HBL-8200 (non-plated brass) outlet.  The 193L already sounds dynamic in the bass all by itself and does not require additional help to enhance low level resolution, so it’s important to find an outlet that offers a neutral character."

The Hubbell outlets generally cost between $10 and $30 pending on where you purchase them.

michaelv-
Alan uses Shakti On-Lines the way I described all the time.  The tweak really makes a very nice upgrade in sound and video quality.

He also attaches On-Lines to the in-wall wiring outer jacket (not the wire leads) using electrical tape and heat shrink.  If you look at your Studio Reference cable that came with your PE V you will want to mimic the On-Line placement for the house wiring.  One On-Line will be placed at the circuit breaker end of the wire and the other at the duplex end.  This tweak provides increased dynamics, detail, and speed.  You might also want to consider trying the dual Shakti Stone/circuit panel door tweak to further enhance sound and video quality.  These are very cheap tweaks considering the increased enjoyment you will receive after they set up.  If you need Shakti products please send me an email.

QSG is superb to treat the wiring entering the outlet and circuit breaker, treating the circuit breaker will knock your socks off.  You can also treat the ac blades on the PE and PE V/Studio Reference power cord.  We use QSG to treat all wire terminations inside the cord.

I look at the cable in Pro V and i am clear now :)

I will eventually replace all outlets where i install PE or Ref. One with Hubbell 8200 . Treat all incoming wires to outlet with QSG as well as in PE's blades.

which hubbell do you recommend for using with PE?    The suggestion here is for Hammond choke only.

thanks.

Thanks for the Hubbell tips Jen. Where are the $10 Hubbell's? The best I see is $12. What would the benefit be to put Hubbells on my non audio/video duplexes on the same phase as my dedicated audio duplex which is hard wired.. Four of these outlets have PE's the rest do not. Should I do only duplexes with the PE's or all duplexes on the phase? Which Hubbell do I use with the PE and non PE duplex?

Jen, on another forum they are suggesting wrapping the twisted wire in the outlet with electrical tape before putting the wire nuts on. Given our wire treatments quicksilver etc. does this add anything? The point being wire nuts harm the sound. Is it within code to wrap the wires?

Then $12 it is.

Why would you use wire nuts to wire a duplex outlet, that is why the outlet is designed with 2 to 4 rear wire terminals, do not use wire nuts.

I'm not really sure, you should look it up on the Hubbell web site.

Jen, my 1st Q is when do you sleep girl? Four posts above I ask about which hubbell's to use with the Four PE's I mention. I can find the 8200H not plated with nickle to be the cheapest at about $8. Is this just as good as the 8300H unplated, at $10 and the 5262 at about $12.50?

Jen,
I received 2 Reference One filters. These will be used in my living room. Right now i plug Ref. One filter into wall outlet where power conditioner is. PE is at Plasma IEC.   Where do you suggest me to plug another Ref. One filter?
The living room is not in the same phase with my 2-channel room .

Can i use Ref. ONe along with PE V pro? or i'd better use it in non-audio circuit?

thanks.

I don't want to butt into Alan and Jen's thread here, but, I'll take the below.

The 5252 is not as well built (read beefy) as the 5262.  Most of the time, the 5252 will have a steel back strap, if you look hard enough, you can find the 5262 with a brass back strap;  although they are getting pretty scarce.

Peace,

Lee
