Couple questions about bi-wireable binding posts
« on: 15 Sep 2007, 06:41 pm »
Just got my first set of speakers with double binding posts (Odyssey Nightingales).  I've never really considered bi-wiring and frankly don't even understand what it is, but two questions.  First, here's a picture of the binding posts of another person's Nightingales which are identical to my own:

1. What's the deal with the speaker wire connecting the the positives and negatives of each set together?  If you're not bi-wiring, does it still need to be there?  What would happen if you took it out when wiring the speakers in a normal manner?

2. I've tried using each set of posts and noticed no difference in sound, and as you can see from the picture, there's no label designating one as primary or anything like that.  Am I safe in assuming that they are indentical and it makes no difference which you use?

Thanks.

the upper left and right posts are for the tweeter and the lower pair are for the woofer.

the jumpers between the two negatives and positives are so you use a single speaker cable to power both the tweeter and woofer together, without the jumpers if you connect to the lower pair posts you will only be driving your woofers and if you connect to the top pair tweeters only.

i'll let some else chime in on how to bi-wire as i've typed enough
do a search on bi-wire/bi-amp.
here is a link on how to bi-wire. http://www.brilliancehifi.co.uk/how-to-bi-wire-speakers.htm

Hey thanks for the reply.  That link explained it pretty well.  So based on what you said and the link you provided, sounds like there should be no difference between using the top or lower set of posts so long as I have the connecting wire in between them.  Cool.

some people claim that there is a difference in sound from connecting to upper or lower pair of posts, you'll just have to listen and decide which one sounds the best.
