Debugging a tube amp
« on: 25 Aug 2007, 01:25 pm »
Well, I finally had time after the birth of our child to go down to the HT room.  When I turned on the system, my center channel is no longer working.  The center channel is run by a tube amp.  How do I determine what's wrong with the tube amp?

Specifically, how do I:

1)  determine what tube is bad?  I have seven tubes.  They all seem to be lit to some degree.
2)  buy a replacement tube (e.g., which vendors sell tubes?).
3)  determine whether I should buy extra spare tubes at the same time?
4)  determine what to do if all the tubes are good?

Now, I don't have any idea when I'll be able to do this, as we're up constantly with the baby, and my days are spent either holding and soothing her or trying to sleep because we've been up half or more of the night.  Nonetheless, when I get time, I'll check back.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Is there any noise when you put your ear against the speaker?

Sorry, guys, with a newborn, I can never get back to these postings.  I was up again last night from around 2-6am, trying to console the child.  We even put the baby in the car and drove around at around 4am!  I don't think my wife got any sleep whatsoever.  Sometimes the baby's great, and other times (like last night), she's just hard to deal with.  I'm up now, but I'm sure I'll be asleep this afternoon.  I can never get anything done!

Anyway, I tracked down the source of the problem, which turned out to be my preamp, and not the tube amp.

I still would like to know how to determine which tubes there are in the amp and where to get spares.  I would appreciate any help on this information.
