Any new speakers using Linaeum (or similar) tweeters?

I remember hearing a friend's DIY speakers in about 1995 that used the Linaeum tweeter from the Radio Shack speakers.  I don't really remember what it sounded like but I remember thinking that it sounded pretty good.  Are there any new speakers being made with this type of tweeter, or is this this technology dead?

I posed the same question to Donald North who is an engineer/designer with Aurasound who currenlty owns the Linaeum patent.

Please see his answer in the attached thread.

Thanks!   When I saw the Heil speakers they made me think of Ohm speakers -- not that the similarities go beyond the horizontal woofer or anything.  If I read Donald North correctly, it looks like the Linaeum demise has as much to do with performace reasons as political reasons (connoting Radio Shack).  Interesting.

Hey ThomDP - interesting stuff.

I've used my Linaeum Tower speakers as my mains for 3 years now...I prefer them slightly to my uber-Modded Maggie MMG's (outboard crossovers with Sonicaps and Alpha-Core inductors). I find the high frequency sounds from them to be better than Quad 11L's, and the Maggies...among speakers cited for good high frequency performance.  I very easily discern the notable differences in say, CD and Vinyl treble and moving magnet/iron and moving coil treble.  I'm not sure if they are extended or detailed....but their output is very precise...however far up the frequency scale they go.

The difference between the Linaeum tweeters from Linaeum and those Linaeum tweeters offered thru Radio Shack are substantial.  I have an Optimus (Radio Shack) LX-7 with Linaeum tweeter and it's merely 'okay'.  But the Linaeum, with a different tweeter module, is in a different league entirely.

The tweeter module on the Linaeum is covered in fine mesh...likely to shield in from those damaging sun rays that the engineer mentioned.

It's a very coherent speaker...only the simples high pass crossover on the woofer....the tweeter is run full range without crossover.  It's a very good and easy load for a tube amp (which I use) and plays to deafening levels in my 12 x 15' room with a Sonic Impact 5w amp (my tube amps are more than generous enough power for them at 50 watts) .  I don't sense significant detail is being missed from bottom to top in comparison to the Maggie, for instance (a detail 'champ' with those ribbons).

I'd love to try some HEIL tweeters one day.

I have a couple pair of Aurasounds (1 bookshelf pair, 1 floor stander pair) I picked up for $200 at Ebay a couple of years ago. These used the monopole Linaeum tweeters.

At a $100 or so a pair at Ebay, I like um! The large bookshelfs sound better than the floorstanders.

I forgot about Van L -- I can't remember ever seeing an ad from them.  I used to live close enough to Chicago to visit on weekends; I never did get around to hearing Van L speakers.

Did you know Telefunken had something similar in the twenties/thirties?

"nothing new under the sun" as they say.  BTW "Telefunken" is such a cool name.
