how much uF is..
« on: 8 Aug 2007, 01:18 pm »
Hi

I am upgrading my passive filter for the speakers and found 3 rectangular grey box type capacitors with these values:
1) AV 10 K 100  and,
2) AV 4.7 K 100
3)  1.J 100   there is clear dot between 1 and J and so space between the dot and J

between K and 4.7 and K and  10   is a "spatial"
between K and 100 is a spatial too ( some space) so 100 means   100Volts?

but if true these are in pico farads , so 4.7 and 10
Are these not very low values for a two way cross over? I see 2 bid resistors and 2 ferrite coils too

reading internet i se that the J means +/- 5% tolerance and K means 10% tolerance

AV is probably some brand
10 K and 4.7 K (with nothing else)  is in picofarad?
so what is in 3) 1.    with the dot?

Off the top of my head, I would say that they are micro farads. Pico farads don't usually belong in speaker x-overs.
I think what you have is 10 uf-100v 10%, 4.7 uf-100v 10% and 1 uf-100v 5%. It would make sense in a cross over except the 1 uf is a little suspicious.

thx Marc

I think you are right about the values

:)  the 1 uF?  ah well what else can it be?  It is a small two way system book shelve box. I think the woofer/mid speaker is 10cm ( 4 inch)  diagonal,  very small and a soft dome tweeter

Famous Italian brand: Sonus Faber:  Concertino but not the present one, which has a 15cm woofer/mid

Is the 1 uf in parrallel with the 4.7 or the 10? That would make more sense.

hi Mark
no it is in series with the filter, I mean, it is the last cap before the tweeter..

Dont make me hesitate i want to order the sonicaps as a replacements..

There would't be a resistor in series to ground with the 1 uf would there?

ok i unsoldered the filter out of the box and will figure out the schematic :)
thx for thinking along ;)

ok this is it

ferrite core coils are not thàt good, are they?

Not as a rule, but without knowing their values, whatcha gonna do? Also, their dcr could be calculated into the design and changing that could really muck things up.
If it was me, I'd change out the caps and the resistors. Do you have a way to measure the big white one? Since some of the signal will pass through him to the mid/woofer, I'd replace it with mills or the like. Is there a wattage value on it?
I would be least concerned with the 22r and the 10uf cap if I were trying to save a couple of bucks.

hi Marc
\the white one is easy, there is some black tar on it that hides the value, it is rectangular and white looks like 10W or so. to replace with mills resistors?  WHat are mills?

Mills are audio grade resistors. If your going with Sonicaps, (good bang for the buck IMO), then for the price of the mills-usually about $4 ea., I think replacing the white sand cast r's are worth it.
Where are you ordering the Sonicaps from? Quite often the same vendor will offer the Mills r's.
