Hi everyone, just registered. I have just bought a pair of AMT's on German ebay. One was damaged in transit (waiting for replacement) so for now I only have one to play with. I am working on a mid/high two driver set up to be used with a separate unit for lows. The objective is to build a very fast dipole with the accent on soundstage and realism for live recordings.
The AMT's are very fast indeed, I have not used this type of driver before so I cant say how they compare to other AMT's but I can say that they are very good, true dipoles so ideal for OB designs
The problem is to find a cone driver to handle from say 150 Hz to 1500 Hz which can keep up with the speed of the AMT. Right now I am using Jordan JX92S and have played with drivers destined for home cinema as they need good dynamics. Also trying to come up with an open baffle which is small but still gives good low mids. I am not trying to get a "ruler" flat response, as I said I am looking for soundstage and for me the open baffle dipole is King for this.
Anybody else doing something similar? BTW the AMT's are from "bel-AMT".

A member of the Hawthorne forum uses air motion drivers with his Silver Iris and is very happy with the results.

Thanks for that, I had a look over there but could not pinpoint the post you refer to. The problem is to find other drivers that are as quick and dynamic as the AMT's. The transient response is better than anything else I have heard and as they are true dipoles the scope for experimenting is wide. I have found that a damping curtain about 4" behind the driver leaves enough of the rear wave to sound very "airy" and lets you use them quite close to a wall. Move them 4 feet away andthe rear curtain is not needed. All in all very promising drivers.

Sean is the name of the member with the AMT Heil's which are air motion drivers. e is using them with the 10" Hawthorne Driver.

Have you researched any of the offerings from PHL?

Audio Technology drivers are some of the fastest on the market, at least that I've ever heard.  I've been using them with some Raven ribbon tweeters, the result is much better than it was previously with some Usher 8945's.  I can't imagine those Hawthorne drivers have a chance of keeping up with an AMT.

Yeah, found Sean's post- interesting. Thanks for pointing me to the other two makers. The danish drivers look similar in concept to the Jordans I have, the french one I will contact to see how their prices are. One of the dilemas of OB building is that you cant really say "I want a driver with these parameters" it's more intuition and then trying them out in a real test. The crossover plays a big part too, trying to get the two/three drivers to blend seamlessly together. I have had good results lately with series designs, but it's all in the ear of the listener I guess!

I actually own a pair of AT drivers as well as a pair of PHL drivers but they are not up and running yet.  When I was making my choices for driver combinations I found the fellas' at www.diyaudio.com very helpful.  I chose to mate an LCY tweeter with the PHL and the AirCirc Scan-speak tweeter with the AT driver.  In all honesty, I am sure you will not be upset with any high-end midrange when mated with your Air Motion tweeter.

Maybe the Beyma Pro 6 drivers are a good match (also 4Ohm and good sensitivity). Just 150 Hz would be a problem, you would have to cross higher.
