First attempt at stitching

I was at Narrabeen Beach today and couldn't get what I wanted into the frame. So I thought why not give this stitching thing a go. Note to self -- next time turn off automatic white balance! I used the free Hugin program (OS/X).

Second attempt... just three frames this time.

Hey John,

Did you shoot with a tripod, or handheld?

Can you briefly describe what you did to get the panoramic shot you posted? Being a little lazy here, I haven't yet attempted stitching...

Cheers

The easy way is to put your camera in stitch mode, fire away and then use the stitch software that came with the camera to put multiple images back together.

I've done it a number of times with a Canon camera by hand. The results for me would be much better with a tripod as I don't do a good job of making sure that each frame has the same vertical alignment.

I think I might give it a go this weekend. I haven't even loaded the software that came with my new Canon A5 IS.

For you Mac guys, I have found a really great pano stitch program called Calico.  It's a lot easier than Hugin and only costs $39.  I love it because it is fast and easy to use because you don't have to pick the overlap points manually.  You can try before you buy (the demo puts a watermark in the images).

I have had much success with panoramic images without using a tripod, BTW.

Cool, I will have to try that out!

I didn't use a tripod, this was an impromptu effort. A tripod would have made stitching easier, as it took quite a few goes before I was able to get the horizon straight...! But perhaps this Calico program will negate that.

The Canon stitch program I have works automatically. You just select the photos to stitch and press go.
