They claim to have an acoustically transparent screen and I was wondering if anybody out there has seen it in action.

If you have, please let me know what pj was being used, as well as the screen size.

Thanks,

George

George, I haven't seen one of those screens, but that's one on my list.  Also check out this one, which used to be DIY but now is not:

SMX

Also, SMX doesn't have electronic screens.

I think the price (most expensive to least expensive) is Stewart, Screen Research, and SMX.  The latter two are weaves.  Supposedly, the gain of the SMX is above one.

I've seen both the Screen Research and the SMX.  If you don't need a ton of gain (have a dark room as you should for a front PJ), the SMX picture is better and the acoustical performance (lack of comb filtering) is better.  All that and the price is less too with IMO a better frame and better light absorbing fabric on the frame.

IRIC, the effective gain on the SMX is approx 1.1

I just saw that the price for a 90" fixed screen with a black backing is over $4k list!!

That makes it more expensive than my Stewart Deluxe Firehawk 110" screen.

Looks like Screen Research won't be the way to go for me.

They are insanely expensive.  That's one of the reasons I haven't gone that route.  (It especially seems odd now that quite good projectors are 2k but acoustically transparent screens are still double that.)  And now that SMX is no longer DIY, there are no good options in the acoustically transparent screen arena.

I meant there are no good reasonably priced options.

For next year or so I will be using a Panny AE-900U.

Just installed my new Mits HC5000 tonight and all I can say is I am giddy with full 1080p!!!  Freekin awesome.  I thought my 720p was good, but this thing is amazing.  NOW I feel like my HT is complete.

I ultimately went with an acoustically transparent screen from SmX Screens:

http://www.smxscreen.com/pro-line-frame.html

It has received some very positive reviews and is a lot easier on the wallet.

It will be arriving tomorrow and I hope to have it installed in the next week.

I want to say thanks to Bryan (bpape) for working with me.   :thumb:

Please let us know what you think once you have it going, George.  I may go that route myself.
