RF Chokes: I'm all choked up!!
« on: 11 Jul 2007, 10:18 pm »
Well I installed my transformer "chokes" and they did a repeat of the last time they were in my system.
Cleaner, darker, quieter background, smoother highs
Much less hash or grain, much less fatiguing to listen to now. They work in my system :thumb:
I will be bringing them to Jim "Hogg's" this Saturday for the rave to see if they work in his system. I figure they are very system dependent, but once Occam put his little magic "Felix" in my system and it worked wonders,  I knew my AC needed help. Thanks Jeff :thumb:

a mess indeed

Hey!

Looked like you got all choked up there Mike. Man! you got how many chokes there... 4? :o

Anyway, I just did a follow up on my choke project/experiment on the original choke thread and it reminded me of your thread here.

Here is the link to it...

After about a month with it I decided that is not for me and prefer my system without it. :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Hey!

Just follow the link to the original post about choke. :D

I have to say that there are people out there that would prefer the kind of sound that my system produce with the choke in it. But for me I like it without it... pretty much the way you've heard it when you were here. :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Ive got three chokes (Hammond 193M) in my system now and love the effect,  However you have to try them in different positions or you can make the sound worse.

The hypothesis of these devices, which are usually used in series for DC, being used in parallel across AC, is that they are a broad spectrum high frequency dampener, similar to the effect of an RC filter network.  If you think of your AC power wiring as a network where RF resonates in every node, then putting a choke in at the node ends (power points, component IECs) dampens RF at that point.  Usually this is good, but sometimes it can change the RF resonant frequencies elsewhere in the system which may be more audible depending on the equipment.

So once they are burned in (about 10 days for the 193L, and about 20 days for the 193M) move them around to different components / power points to tune the effect.  The system will sound overly warm before they are burned in.

Use 193L on individual components and 193M on power boards or 240V.

I add a power cord to my 193Ms so I can swap them from one receptacle to the next to get the most pleasant configuration.
