Is it possible to build a PC-less audio server ?
« on: 11 Jul 2007, 08:06 am »
Hello I am wondering if it is possible to build a DIY music/media server but not based in a regular PC.

I know many things would come from PC parts but still I can't think about plugging a PC to my audio system.

Maybe it would be more or less like a DVD recorder but do you know if somebody out there has kits or anything that helps to fulfill this idea ?

Thank you

To my knowledge, it depends on what you're looking for. If you need a drive for ripping, then I haven't seen any kits, but something like the Olive systems (http://www.olive.us/p_bin/) Musica will work well for that. It has a built in hard drive to store the music once it's ripped. All you need to do is hook it up to your preamp/amp and away you go.

If you don't need a drive for ripping, do a Google search for "Networked Attached Storage" or NAS. Those are hard drives that have built in network access. What you'd need to do is simply use your current PC to rip your files onto the NAS disk. Then you can put the NAS disk in another room, down in a basement, etc. (with its fans out of your hearing range). Then you get a streaming device like a Squeezebox, and plug that into your audio system. The Squeezebox grabs your music as you need it from the NAS, and you have simply access to your entire library.
