Wooden faceplates & knobs
« on: 29 Jun 2007, 07:46 pm »
If anyone is interested in custom made wooden face plates, I'm now making them in addition to the already popular Thingamaknobs. The faceplates are usually about $150 and the knobs $25 each, depending on the wood desired.

SYG has been posting here for years and does beautiful work, I've a pair of his knobs (Ebony) on my S&B tranny pre!   Do a search here or visit his site by clicking here  :thumb:

SYG,

Did you get my email from about a week ago asking about a knob for my mapletree head amp?  I sent it from the link on your web page.

Thanks,

Jim

hey circlers, i've been very busy lately, so here's a few new pix for your consideration:http://pages.sbcglobal.net/quackfat/index.html

i'd also like to mention that i now have a new polishing system that i'm very excited about. it has allowed me to offer a hand-rubbed finish that will amaze you with the natural shine and depth it reveals. so if you like a more glossy look, without any lacquer, this is for you!

it's not too easy to see them, but at least it's a cool system to see:

Here's a newly completed chassis in red oak with Gabon ebony Thingamaknobs which I made for a Silver Rock passive preamp:

Here's a chassis that I just finished. It's made from some really nice 3/4" quilted maple that I picked up a couple months ago. The rear panel has been machined for 3 sets of WBT Nextgen RCA's and the hole on the front panel is for a remote eye. The screws are all stainless steel into threaded brass inserts. The Thingamaknob was made from blood wood with a maple inlay. It's been treated with natural Danish oil, sanded to 12000 then buffed with carnauba... it's smooth.

Beautiful stuff, have you considered making some cones or footers? I"d be very interested in that.

How would this work, , if someone were interested?

Would I send you the component (pre amp,  amp....etc) and you make the wooden faceplate,  knobs and install them to the component's chassis?  Or would you just ship the faceplates,  knobs and I put it all together?

i've done some ebony footers in the past. you can pm me about what you'd like and i'll let you know if i can do it or not, as well as the cost.

there are two ways of doing it that seem to work best. you can either send the piece to me or you can make templates of the piece. having the actual piece is always the best way to insure proper fit.

Maple burl Thingamaknob on my new APL Hi-Fi Bada DC222. This is the first time in a year that I needed a Thingamaknob for myself.

Very nice. When I owned a pair of AES Sixpacs and an AES AE-3 DJH, I often thought how cool these pieces would be with wood trim wrapped around 3 sides.

simply beautiful stuff. Would you consider doing a cabinet for say a pre amp. I have a few vintage pieces which dont have cabs.
