I absolutely love the player but must confess I have an uneasiness with the tray as well.  Besides the speed the tray is loud at the end of opening and when it finishes closing.  When you open the tray you get the feeling the disk is going to fly out at you.  The tray open and closing speed seams a little to fast.  But the noise it make is disconcerting, never had a player that made noise like this when loading and unloading a disk.  I demoed other brands and none of them made the kind of noises the BCD1 makes opening and closing.  Tray speed is similar to the Musical Fidelity A5 but its tray is silent.  Maybe if the speed were slowed at the beginning and end of its travel it would not make the noise, or some type of cushioning material on the mechanism at the open and closed position.

When you use the remote to change the display to show the amount of time remaining on a track or the disc it resets every time you put a new disk in.  It seams the display preference should be able to be kept in the memory instead of resetting every time a new disk is put in.

No sonic issues whatsover.  If the above items were addressed I would be the happiest person alive.

I am not sure if I have already said this but on Friday it was confirmed that the Bryston CD Player will be reviewed in the November 2008 issue of Stereophile.

Hi All,

Got this today from a magazine in France - a review of the Bryston CD Player.

I would appreciate a translation of the conclusion or parts thereof - assuming it's good of course!

Per Google, this is what it says:

"A back cover with plenty of connections!

In the end, Bryston here proves his excellent expertise in the field of high-end audio. His CD is certainly expensive if it relates to a general public but, faced with few tenors much more expensive… it may come as a surprise to many.
If you are looking for an excellent drive audio and / or analog virtuoso player, our advice is not especially not overlook the choice here by the manufacturer decidedly gifted although slow to produce!
Mind you, better late than never… the future of the CD is now limited (iPod, MP3 etc)… it goes without saying that this CD will be perhaps the last party that you can acquire.
That it does… he will do great honour to your collection aging (but how estimable) CD!

Our Quebec Rep was kind enough to send me this English translation overview of the review in the magazine in France:  http://v5.worldinhd.com/?p=938

The review is good, very ‘’down to earth’’: no verbal diarrhea…compared to some reviewers!

They praise:
·The ‘’human size’’ of Bryston’s production.
·The care taken in having an ‘’home made’’ clock for the drive’’.
·The fact that the DAC’s CS4398 have been optimized.
·The quality of the analogue treatment.
·The sturdiness of the metal work (good for the proper PU of the digital stream).

The conclusion:
·Very good as a drive, using the digital output.
·Very good CD player, using the analogue output.
·Could be one of the last good CD players you can buy, ‘’it will help you enjoy all your CD’s’’. (We read this before haven’t we)

Hi Rick,

The CD Player uses a different version of the Crystal DAC in the SP2.

•SP2 – Crystal CS43122

•BDA-1 Outboard DAC - Crystal CS4398

•BCD-1 CD Player – Crystal CS4398

'All of this being said the most critical part of the DAC circuit in our products is the output from the D to A is directly connected to a pair of Bryston proprietary Class A Discrete Operational Amplifiers rather than the typical IC chips employed in most other products. This makes a huge difference in resolution and dynamic headroom performance.'

Hi

Which Crystal DAC is in a SP 1.7 that had been upgraded from a SP1?

Thanks

Hi James,

This is just my review... as i'm one of the writers at worldinhd.com
I tought you knew that...
Anyway your translation is quite acurate and i will explain more if you want but in 2-3 weeks cause i'm on vacation right now.

So, my congratulations for your magnificient player.  :thumb:

PS : i didn't say it was "the last CD to buy" but as iPod and MP3 is starting to rule the world... i said this CD could be one among the last (good) ones that would be available to buy... and that it was a pretty good choice to make !!!

PS2 : we had "a lot" of people reading my article... here in France...
PS3 : i'll be trying (and reviewing) the external DAC soon...

I was refering to the excellent review of THE ABSOLUTE SOUND that JAMES sent me and that most people, here in France... won't read.

As for the CDs, that's quite amazing, i'm now able to play old CDs that i was ready to throw away !!!!!!!!!
How can you guys do that ? What's the secret JAMES.... ?  :o
