If you are using this combination, can you please post any comments in this thread?

Here is a link to a thread on the Slim Devices forum that can get the ball rolling:

caveat: i bought one of these when they first came out, and could not get it to connect via my apple extreme wifi router. tech support at nokia (after a lengthy discourse) informed me that the device was really developed for a windows platform and they did not support apple. i understand there are those out there that have used the nokia with an apple router, but i could not make it happen. it IS one slick little device, though...

I have a few SqueezeBoxen, a Dell Axim X50 running TelCanto, a Nokia 770 and a few other wireless devices that I can use for control of the SB.

The Nokia 770 skin is mostly geared toward locating and selecting by album art. It is a VERY graphical interface while TelCanto is more text based.

To truly use the Nokia 770 skin to it's fullest extent you should have all your albums tagged with art.

Album Art Aggregator is a good program to use for this. It can do a mass download of all your covers at once.

The Nokia 770 can also be used to receive streams from SlimServer.

If you are within your WI-FI range, you can use this with headphones to listen to your music while mowing your lawn, for instance.

Wayne, do you know if you can also control the volume?  What about skipping songs, random play, the stuff that you can do with Slimserver?

Everything you can do on SlimServer can be controlled from the Nokia.

The Nokia 770 skin is really just another web interface.

If your eyes are good enough you can use the standard SlimServer skin.

If you have multiple SB in your house, you can control each one individually from the Nokia.

I use a NetGear WPN824 wireless router and it works very well with the SB, Nokia, Dell Axim and all the other 802.11 toys we have.

The developer of the Nokia 770 skin does have some suggestions for those just picking up the Nokia

"A couple suggestions to those Woot!ing the 770 today:

the first thing you should do is install the most current 770 OS image available. who knows what version the Woot! 770s will come with, and a lot of stuff got fixed between initial release and what's current today.

secondly, install the streaming media manager Canola. http://openbossa.indt.org/canola/

for using my skin, make sure you have javascript enabled in the browser, view the skin in full-screen mode (button on the top of the device toggles full-screen mode), and make sure the browser settings are to not show the toolbar in full-screen mode.

good luck woot!ers,

George, I've been using the 770 with the Nokia skin for some time. It does have a few quirks still. Sometimes if it's been running a while and I go to change like the sort order of my playlist, it won't refresh automatically. I'll have to go back into frame mode on the Nokia and hit the refresh icon. But by and large it's a good addition to extending Slimserver usability.

My Axiom can be a little flakey too.

Usually a simple re-boot does the trick.

Wayne,
Great tips and heads-up.  Thanks to you and Ben Klaas for this.  My album art collecting is by hand (see gallery) but the AA Aggregator might be a time saver for me (problem is I use FLAC album files with cue sheets).  Anyway, looks like they are having website issues.

One other thing...

The battery of the Nokia 770 might last about 3 hours. It uses the same battery found in a lot of the Nokia phones.

I will suggest picking up a spare battery and maybe a recharging station. I have that for my Axim and it really comes in handy.

I believe PeteG has a direct cable connected to his Axim from an AC adaptor.

ted_b,

Thank you for the comments.

I actually bought Ben's Nokia 770 that he used to develop the Nokia skin on.

I switch out between the Noika and the Axim depending on whim

I do like the TelCanto interface for the text based, old school, linear thinking, times.

The Nokia screen can be a bit hard to read text from, especially after a couple of beers

For those that don't know (and for me who forgot after updating his OS ), what is the web address one must put in to point the 770 to slimserver?

Point your 770's web browser to "http://server.ip.address:9000/Nokia770/" (replacing server.ip.address with the ip address or domain name for your machine that Slimserver is on)

Here is a link to the wiki with all the instructions for integrating the Nokia with SlimServer.

It also has instructions on how to use the Nokia as a streaming player

Wayne,
Great tips and heads-up.  Thanks to you and Ben Klaas for this.  My album art collecting is by hand (see gallery) but the AA Aggregator might be a time saver for me (problem is I use FALC album files with cue sheets).  Anyway, looks like they are having website issues.

FWIW, I ran it on my collection earlier today and it got a fair amount of them wrong, so don't expect it to work miracles.  The software definitely doesn't like self-titled CD's.  I can't say that it ever found the right cover for any of the ones in my collection and in most cases found a cover for some of the titled albums from the same group, or worse some completely random cover, that I couldn't figure out how it decided that was the one to go with...  Still it does get quite a few right and it makes it fairly easy to walk through your collection checking to make sure it grabbed the right cover.  Also it marks all albums it couldn't find any cover art for, so you can make sure those get taken care of.  So overall the program is handy.  I don't know if it'll work on Flac albums or not, but it might.  You'd have to test it.

Josh,

You nailed it

As mentioned earlier, I have a Dell Axim w/ TelCanto, a Nokia 770, and most recently, an OQO   :o

Lots of money and time involved in trying to find the "Ultimate" remote interface for the SB.

I DO like the larger screen size of the OQO. I do NOT like how hot it runs. The price of one is absolutely ridiculous.

I will have all three of them available to play with at RMAF.
