Second SVS SB12+ Sub Happy Birthday To Me !
« on: 22 Jun 2007, 02:58 pm »
Hello all so Happy Birthday To me (and farthersday) I ordered a second SVSSB12+ sub and cant wait to set it up.
My system will now be
Denon 3805 AVR
Denon 3910 CD/DVD
Velodyne SMS-1
Paradigm Studio 40's V.3 (with upgraded to sigtuniture tweeters)
Paradigm Studio CC Center
Paradigm Cenima 90's
AND 2 SVS SB12Plus Subs
Samsung HLN507W 50" DVL TV
FURMAN PLH-15
I will be setting up the subs out of the SMS-1 LFE
I am just a bit concerned on setting levles with 2 subs and phase
Any tips ?
The subs will be one on each end of the TV stand -and I may move my Paradigms off the TV stand and place them on the subs.

I don't think I would consider setting the monitors on top of the subs. It defeats one advantage of the sat/sub system - that you can place the bass where it blongs and the M/T where it belongs.

I would take Floyd Toole's suggestion: try each tucked into a respective corner or both stacked in a single corner. Measurements should tell you which is better for your room.

Unfortunly room lay out will not alow me corner placement of my sub
I do like alot of lows and when I turn up the sub a bit it becomes directional -I can tell its comming from front right of the room
That is way I want to run 2 one on each side

Right now, I'm using two of my three subs (I need one more amp).  I also think that subs become fairly recognizable if you have one.  Can you place the subs so that they aren't in mirror positions along the wall (or in exactly opposite of the mirrored positions)?  In other words, if one sub is three feet from the front wall, don't place the second sub three feet from the front or rear wall.  Instead, try say five feet from the front wall.

How would it defeat the advantage ? The mains would still be getting everything above 60 or 80 and the subs everything under 60 or 80
It would simulate a pair of full range speakers no ?

I think the idea is that you can place the mids/high at the best location for imaging and other effects, but then place the subs at the best location for even bass throughout the room.  Typically, these locations are not the same.

Yes, that is exactly right. Toole's paper shows examples of this. Placement of floorstanding speakers are always a compromise because of this reason. It's the decoupled bass from the M/T that gives sat/sub systems an advantage over floorstanding speakers. That flexibility makes the best of room acoustics.

Well I quickly set up my second sub last night and it is directly on the other side as the other one and I have to say with no calabration it sounds much better ! Muhe more even lows in the room !

I did not calibrate properly Just quick tone from my AVR to get them close .
Does anyone have any tips on set up for 2 subs , like phase and level ?
Right now it is LFE out of my AVR into a Velo SMS-1 Out from the SMS-1 into the SB12+ with a Y conector . L&R out of the first SB12+ into L&R input second.
I can run 3 subs off of the SMS-1
Thanks for any thoughts !
Ahh with no calibration my lows sounded much better -evenly dispersed through the room

Antman27,

You may consider raising the Subs off the floor 22% of your room height as per ASC Tube trap recco. I did and had great success. Say your room Height. is 8'-0" multiply by 22% and raise Sub so that the center of the Woofer is at that Height. Will will be a very, very happy camper.

pull the monitors out to at least the front edge of the table that your tv monitor is setting on (further out would be even better) - the sound will likely improve even more - regardless of whether or not the speakers are setting on the table or on the subs.  you can always move things back, when not listening/watching...
