Anyone heard the Morrow Audio Ambient loudspeakers?
« on: 21 Jun 2007, 05:05 am »
I've become fond of the top-firing design of the Castle Howard loudspeaker. It completely disappears and fills the room with music while still providing a solid image.

I've seen the Morrow Audio Ambient crossoverless, top-firing loudspeakers advertised on Audiogon, and I'm wondering if anyone has heard them?

Danny (GR Research) has a similar type speaker to the Morrow....heard it in his room at RMAF 2006.

lonewolfny42, how did Danny's speaker sound?
I'd also be interested in hearing if anyone has any experience with the Morrow audio Ambient.

Had a quick listen....sounded ok. They were newly built. I think he was shooting for HT type speaker...if I recall.
Check with Danny for more info.... :thumb:

TIC posts here, lives near Morrow, and has bought from him.

No real information on the driver is a bit odd.

If you like that design, consider the Samadhi Acoustics designs developed by Dick Olsher.

The Decware Radial speaker uses an inverted mid/woofer, ribbon tweeter, tube cabinet, and is more efficient:

I've heard earlier versions and they produce a huge overhead cloud of image.  Is that the kind of presentation that you're after?

I like the design (adjustable ribbon tweeter; no crossover to the mid/woofer and just a cap to protect the ribbon tweeter; inherently stiff tube cabinet; 3rd generation - mature design; and reasonably efficient).

And I know the guys who build them.   :thumb:

Perhaps I'm not being clear.  The sweet spot of the Decware Radials was HUGE while the soundscape extends well beyond the speakers.  Tilting the tweeter would probably move the image up or down.

I have had a speaker for almost one year now that I really love. It is the Lowther 2.8 Ambience made by commonsenseaudio.com. Go to the Lowther page of their website and you will see it -- The Morrow looks almost exaclty the same.

Mine have the Lowther DX3 driver in front and an Audio Nirvana driver on top. David Dicks is a nice guy to talk to and it is worth giving him a call.

Hope this helps, 8)

Thanks, Chris, while they do have the omni horn, it's still not the direct radiator of the Morrow Ambient's. But then, the Planets doesn't have a front speaker as well so the differences in presentation might be huge.

The Castle Howard was a very interesting design as it had a woofer and tweeter facing forward and then a second woofer firing upward.

It sounds like a job for an automated Ebay search. An Ebay UK search will likely turn up a pair sooner if you just must have a pair.

In addition to what others have recommended look into Shahinian Acoustics (very $$$ though), and the different lines of Omni speakers from Mirage.
