That's a pier leading out to a lighthouse.  It's basically big boulders and concrete with corrugated steel on the sides.  There's a very long concrete wall after the curvy mandlebrot-like structure which connects with the lighthouse.  This is about three feet wide without any railing on the sides.  It was covered in a sheet of ice so I didn't wanna venture out to the lighthouse itself.

Anyone ever fallen into icy water with all their clothes on?  Do you still have enough fight in ya to swim for it?

If you fall into icy water and have to swim you need to take your outer clothes off so you don't get pulled down - if you are lucky you can swim to safety before you succumb to the cold. Thankfully this has never happened to me and I can simply tell you what they say on TV

Yup! At school they would cut a hole in the ice and we would jump in with clothes ski's and a heavy backpack!
Then we had to swim some distance and get up on the ice with handheld spikes!
Then we had to run to a tent and change there!
VIKING!!!  :thumb:

I brought the 300mm out of hiding today.  I might've done this a little earlier so the sun would be at a better angle, but I'll take it as is.  Days are so dang short these days...

nathanm,  Well done-great photo.  It works without the sun. I looked at it and immediately turned the thermostat up.  It literally gave me the shivvvverrrs.  You really captured the "darkness" that winter can bring.  There is that time late in the afternoon...........

I'm guessing you can't capture that kind of detail with a rebel xti or d40x...

I can't speak for cameras I haven't used but the 4x5 scan easily has more detail than my digital.  No contest.  I did this scan at 24x30" at 300ppi.  Or if you prefer, 67.4 megapixels.  But I like film for the tone, not the resolution.  Although I do love the sharp branches and grass and whatnot.

On second thought this one is my picture of the day.  Better overall composition.  This was the last shot and had no direct sunglight at all, though.  Sky is a bit dull, but it's hard to find a decent cumulus-ridden sky in winter.  My favorite bit is the slow shutter water.  I never get sick of that old cliché.  It looks like a bit bowl of creamy cocoa, or black chrome!  15 seconds at f45 with Efke PL25.

Your photos are absolutely gorgeous, Nathan.  I know that they represent a lot of effort, and I thank you for sharing them.  I am mildly surprised at how well they translate across the web, and I can only imagine how they look "in person."

Wow, well done! I was going to exclaim at the first but I also love the cocoa! While I'm somewhat glad I can't make shots like that (not cold enough here!) I very much doubt I could even if I could (if that makes sense...)

Also, I don't mean to nick pits, but both of these seem to be tilted to the right. (?)

Sorry nathanm,  I vote for pic number 1.  There is crispness to it and vibrancy contrasting the winter gloom.  As you said, the slow shutter speed for water (pic #2) is a cliche.  But it is time wearied and much abused--kind of like a laugh-track.

How the heck do you type accents like on cliche^*?

I'd like pic 1 with the composition of pic 2, please.

And a digital camera that can take pics like that 4x5.

And then I'd like the talent and skill it takes to take those pics.

Thanks for the compliments!  Don_S, I can't remember how it was done on Windows, (I'm assuming here) I think you hit Alt and a three or four digit code to get the extended characters.  Is that the Unicode code perhaps?  Check the Keyboard control panel.  On Mac there's a thing called character palette which gives you all the extra stuff and you just double click to insert the character.  It's not exactly quick, though.  It gives you a little description of what each character is too.  Like the e in cliché is a "latin small letter e with acute" Ah-ha.  Man, there is a dizzying array of diacritical marks, it almost seems a şĥæmë þėŏpľè ŕÃŔĕĽƴ ǚƨę ƮħƎƜ.  Maybe they're afraid of getting diaresis.

John, the slight tilt is unfortunately unavoidable.  In 1998 the entire state of Wisconsin was tilted 2º east to compensate for some drainage problems and it's been a slow process getting our bubble levels recalibrated.  My camera back probably has one of the old kind.  I wish there were some way in Photoshop to correct this but I have yet to find it.
