Newbie to the circle
« on: 30 May 2007, 04:48 pm »
Hi all.  just wanted to introduce myself and give a rundown of my system.  For my two channel setup i've got a pro-ject debut turntable, marantz dv-8400, rega brio (not the 3) and a pair of ref 3a de cappo (not i version).  I'm looking to get into an integrated tube amp to replace the brio.  I really do enjoy my current setup, but wanted to expierement with tubes.  i've been trying to liquidate my 5.1 setup to fund a new amp (you can probably tell by all my for sale postings).  The two amps i'm really interested in are the cary sli-80 and the rogue tempest II.  Does anyone have any experience with either of these in a a/b comparison or have lived with either for a while? i'd really like your input on these amps.  I'm open to opinions on other amps as well.

Thanks for any help guys, i'd really appreciate it,
Andy

Welcome, s2groove

Richidoo has experience with the Cary; and I think boead has some experience with the Rogue.

good luck,

Hello Andy and welcome to AC.

I have had experience with both of these pieces lately and can tell you they are both nice units but obviously different.

My personal preference was the SLI80. It had a more organic, romantic presentation but still retained excellent detail and transparency. A bit warmer than the Rogue due to it's tube rectification. There are a few different options you can get with the SLI 80 and I heard both the Jensen PIO version as well as the standard as well as a Teflon cap modified unit.
The Jensen version was warmer but didn't have the extension at both frequency extremes as compared to a Teflon cap'ed version I have heard. It boils down to personal taste and preferences here.
If you can audition any of the pieces of interest, this would obviously be the best route to take but I don't think you would be unhappy with either. They are both (Rogue & Cary) very good options.

Good luck and have fun in your journey.

Thanks for the advice.  I'm leaning more towards the cary amp now.  It's probably a better match for the de cappo's anyway.
