Let me throw up one that may not be the most thought provoking but certainly makes me think is Peter Weir's "Picnic at Hanging Rock."

The ending-- or lack thereof-- makes one think for a long long time after viewing.  See, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picnic_at_Hanging_Rock.  And as an audiophile bonus it has a truly very good soundtrack from i think- yes you read that right Zanfir the master of the pan flute [late night tv]

The film is apparently thought provoking enough to have spawned a cottage industry on the film. So not only is it a mind trip, its also a very very good movie.

``We worked very hard,'' Weir told an interviewer for Sight & Sound, ``at creating an hallucinatory, mesmeric rhythm, so that you lost awareness of facts, you stopped adding things up, and got into this enclosed atmosphere. I did everything in my power to hypnotize the audience away from the possibility of solutions.''

Every woman should know that while vanity is selective, unlike diamonds, there are no atrocities committed in the name of audio.
I wouldn't be so sure about that.  Have you ever been to a snake farm?

Apocalypse Now and Das Boot are pretty draining to watch in their entirety, I felt like those left a bigger impression than Saving Private Ryan did, but that's just my opinion.

Speaking of war films, one thing in The Thin Red Line in particular that stuck in my memory is the horrific world young men can be thrust into by old men.  I think Terrence Mallick went out of his way to show us that.  Some with highly questionable reasons.

Perhaps not the most thought provoking film of all time but certainly one that struck a few chords with me.... "Lost in Lamancha"

A documentary on Terry Gilliam's making of on Don Qui Hote. A true statement piece of how "things are never so bad that they can't get worse". I'm in production/product development (not film) but all the same, a pretty impactfull film.

I hope that some of you get the chance to watch this film.

Saw "Syriana" last night on cable.  If that isn't a commentary on why we need energy independence I don't know what is.   Well, actually, there is one ongoing, isn't there?

-i saw the original "failsafe" when i was about 12-13; it totally freaked me out.
-i saw "looking for mr. goodbar" when i was in college, i was totally disturbed.  in fact, i went w/a girl who i had been dating for about a month, & we'd started being intimate on a semi-regular basis.  after the flick, i yust dropped her off at home, said good nite, not even a kiss.  we were both freaked...
-i saw "2001 space odyssey" when it first came out, on the big screen at the uptown theatre on connecticut ave in dc; i have seen it more than 10 times since.  easily the best flick ever made, imo.  and, "2010" was an excellent sequel, tho nothing could come close to the original.
-"clockwork orange" is a classic great flick.
-"caddyshack" is one of the all-time best classic stupid comedies ever made. wayner, i lol'd when i read your comment!   :green:  (animal house was cool, too, but no comparison to caddyshack, imo.)
-the recent "talladega nights" comedy will be another classic killer stupid comedy, imo.
-i fell asleep in the original "star wars" - the only thing thought prowoking for me is how anyone liked it or any of its sequels & prequels.
-"being there" was so thought prowoking, i saw it three times in two weeks, when it came out.
-"mash" is a great war movie.
-"liquid sky" is a surreal sci-fi drug-culture combo movie
-jackie chan's original "drunken master" is a classic comedy/kung-fu flick, i have seen it many times, & will likely see it s'more.
david byrne's "stop making sense" and joe cocker's "mad dogs & englishmen" are two fantastic concert movies.
-i loved michael moore's commentaries "sicko" & "farenheit 9/11".

-yust tonight i saw bill maher's "religulous".  bill maher is my new hero.     he musta read my mind when he was making that flick.   :green:

At about 17 saw "Easy Rider" with some fellow high school buddies.  Walked out of the theater shaken.
Private Ryan
The Great Dictator (Charlie Chaplain)
Lawrence of Arabia (restored in a theater); Breathtaking!

The last two speak to conditions that still reverberate in our current times.

Saw this today waiting on the playoff games . . In The Valley of Elah.  Clarize Theron is in this with Susan Sarandon without a lick of makeup (either) and Tommy Lee Jones for which he was nominated for Best Actor.  This a somber little mystery with an understory about Bush's war in Iraq.  Very unglamorous-not your Gladiator type movie (comes to mind)-and very well written and acted.  It's a good movie.  Depressing story(s), made more so when you understand that the crime is based on a real event, but real good work.

In the late 60s saw an obscure English film "If" - director Lindsay Anderson - which certainly stayed with me.

In the theatre I was in, in Montreal, the audience had been thoroughly polarized by events leading up to the final scene so that at the end when the lights came up, there was a definite looking around to determine whose side you were on.

Very powerful film.

Russell- Be SURE to see Oh Lucky Man! (Lindsey Anderson, Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren).  That's LA's statement film and only very recently made it to DVD.

Gents,

Traitor - Don Cheadle holds this one together with another great performance. Very timely and thought provoking on many levels.

In recent memory I would say, 'INTO THE WILD'. Saw it months ago and I am still thinking about it. Great soundtrack to (especially for Eddie Vedder fans).
