Speaker recomm's for Altmann BYOB amp
« on: 18 May 2007, 08:02 pm »
I've just purchased Altmann's DAC so I'm slowly moving towards his full system - as long as there is an inconvenient battery standing in my room, I see no reason why not using it to the full effect.

I'd love to hear thoughts from these who had a chance to hear Altmann BYOB what would be the recommendations for the speakers to perform in 4.5x5.5x3(H) meters room (24m2).

I want to have a full frequency range extension and sound as natural as possible, if there are colorations they should lead towards sweetness and easy, relaxed sound.

Thanks mates;)

Well done!

Curious to know if you bought it new or 2nd hand and is it the "full monty"? Did you get an optima battery then?

I'm also looking at the Altmann stuff ... will start with the BYOB amp first though (after selling my current mono amps)

As long as you have a battery, why not make it an all battery system

using a Fertin 20EX fullrange filed coil in open-baffle.

I just have a chance to live with a Zu Druid in my fully Altmannized system (DAC, ADC, BYOB) for two weeks, it was a very good combination, I really liked it - some ways it was even more inviting than the present combination of BYOB and my Avantgarde Trio (which works really well since last summer in our house, but in a different price range of course).

i bought altmann dac with jisco and toslink, no hi-rez option - i doubt i will need it, i don't use these formats and i have no time nor money to go into that direction. anyway it was a s/h piece so there was no choice but i think this was perfect for 735 euros what i paid for it (instead of 1090 new). i can't be more happy.

i had the first refusal on BYOB amp but i didn't take it because i was undecisive - it was sold in no time together with a battery (the shipping plus import duties plus s/h battery would cost me more than to buy the new one here). plus i think i want to buy blue exxide maxima deep cycle instead of red optima.

zu druid is one of the options, but i have to hear that first somewhere;)

Is this amp Tripath based?  I can't find anything about its topography anywhere.  I have been very happy with the Trends amp so I would like to try out this little guy.

As I know it is not Tripath, a kind of bridged configuration using ICs.

Just as reference, you can see my Altmann system if you look me up at Audiogon under the same username (picutres too). I currently use a pair of speakers with the Lowther DX3 driver (96db). The thing is though, I had VR-4JR's (89db) before these and the BYOB had more than enough power for them. The point I want to make is that you should not feel limited in speaker choices. The BYOB can drive a wide range of speakers. The BYOB can drive moderately efficient speakers to high volume levels with no distortion -- so don't underestimate these 10-20 WPC.

With speakers its all personal preference. Listen to recommendations, but try to hear for yourself first. Happy shopping! :thumb:

You should try field Coil Speakers. It might just be the ticket to nirvana.

1. Supavox 215-2000. I've heard them and they are absolutely great.

2. Fertin 20EX. I have these and can vouch for them.

3. Beatnick - If you feel like trying out exotic japanese speakers.

4. Shindo Latour

5. Full Range speakers - FSMD-X. Not much information on the web about them.

6. Feastrex 5e/6e

interesting list raov1!
3,5 and 7 are new to me.

edit - I just went onto the site for #5 and noticed these drivers look identical, except for the label, to the AER drivers shown here:

http://www.bd-design.nl/index.html?lang=en-uk&target=d82.html

(under "suitable drive units")

I wonder what that's about.

RD:
Glad you like the list  :D. I think it is quite complete with the present production FCs.

   http://www.fullrange-speakers.com/eng/home-e.htm
According to this they modify AERs and Lowthers. I'm not sure if the field coil is their own creation or a modification. Alas not much info on the web.

The Maxonics are expensive ... in the $30-40,000 and powered by SIT amps. These are brought back into production recently after the original maker ..... died in a tragic plane crash in the 80's or 90's.

I tried to contact Beatnick(takasuka). His divers seem intersting as he says his cones, which are flat causes less distortion."A common reed tone" as he says gives splendid music.  Also they are superlight ... 0.7gms (i think) .... which should make it ultra fast too. Too bad as I don't know any japanese to ask more details.

pardon my ignorance but what is field coil? is there anything that is relatively reasonably priced.

i've just discovered an austrian speaker called diva that uses eminence coaxial driver with paper cone, i think it's 12".

looks like a very promising DIY tool. anyone knows it?

Depends on your perception of resonable prices. These are produced in small quantities and definitely not cheap.

thanks anyone

i'm afraid this kind of things are almost impossible to get where i live

is BYOB almost exclusively used for horns and similar? anyone has any experience with it driving some dynamic speakers succesfully?

like proacs or similar....? something already known to work well with low powered amps.
