Can I build a horn around my sub???
« on: 15 May 2007, 08:12 pm »
So I was looking for HT design ideas the other day and I see that many people hide their subs inside cabinets covered with speaker cloth.

I was thinking about possibly build a cabinet at the front of my theater to hold my equipment and hide my sub (Velodyne SPL1200) under it.

Has anyone done this?  What did it do to the performance of the sub?  Did it make it sound muffled or boomy?  Did it vibrate the other components?   :dunno:

So then I thought maybe I'd build angled walls around the back, sides and top of the sub inside the cabinet to replicate the horn effect you get from the corner of a room.  Heck, I could even build the walls to have curves like you would see on a horn.  I thought this may project the sound better and help isolate the rest of the cabinet / equipment from vibration.

Anyone have thoughts on this?  Would I be crazy for going to all this trouble?  :o   :duh:

Thanks!

Seems a lot of trouble to go to for a sub that's pre-built already. If you were building one from scratch with another driver, that'd be a different story...

Good point.  What about the vibration concern?  I'd really hate to put a sub in a cabinet only to shake distortion into the rest of my components.

If you want to have an easily-hidden sub because of aesthetic concerns, I'd go infinite baffle :D

Definite performance differences over traditional boxes, and very easily hidden behind a grill.
