stupid question.
« on: 11 May 2007, 12:47 am »
Hey guys,
I really don't like music out of my multichannel amp....well, it is quite fine actually but compared to when I have my 845 tubed monoblocks hooked to the top end of my biamped speakers it is just hard to go back. Here is my stupid question. Would it be bad to leave the tubes hooked up to the speakers while powered off and have the surround amp also attatched and running? The binding posts on the speakers are kind of a pain to deal with with the spades of my tubes...the surround amp has simple bananas so I just yank them when listening through the tubes. I know, lame...it is a pain in me arse though.

thanks, Beat

I would not recommend leaving the unpowered tube amp connected, as the actual feed from the amp is the secondary of the output transformer and, it's parallel impedance will interact with the speaker impedance enough so as to possibly alter or distort the response.  The amount of effect will be mostly dependent on your surround amps output power/capability and, its output impedance.

Nope - don't leave both amps hooked up. If only that you might inadvertantly, in a time of relative stupidity or intoxication, turn them both on at the same time. Be safe and stay happy.

Get some banana plugs and run 2 sets of speaker wires, one from each amp. Then you can just plug and play the one you want to use at the time. That's what I do when I feel the need for tubes over solid state, and visa versa.

Enjoy,
Bob

thanks guys,
that is all I needed to hear. I will probably just send these cables back to zu and let them do the job of swapping out for bananas. I really like the cables themselves but for what I am doing with them at this point the spades are a PITA.
