Manaul bias setting?
« on: 18 Apr 2007, 03:17 pm »
I need to manually bias my tube amp even though it came with auto bias option I want make sure that my bias is set correctly manually.  I read the manual and it states that the setting should be between .36 to .44 or (360 to 440) the amp is running EL34/KK-77 what is a happy medium setting for optimal performance?    Do I set it at .36, .44 or .40?  now I have a silly question, can I purchase a cheapo radio shack multimeter to do the job or do I need something that is better, if so, what type?  Digital, etc?

Thanks!

Depends on the design. My Jolida is biased at 38-39. I use the JJ EL34L's. I have heard of some using 50ma bias for their EL34 amp(different design/make).

The Rat Shack multimeter is just fine for this purpose IMO. Try all three settings and listen. You may decide you prefer one over the other. I can get different sound when adjusting the bias with the 211 based SET. Give it a go. Happy listening.
