hey paul, be fair with your comparison & A-B the 'mod after 200hrs also.   i think you're gonna be surprised...  it'll be cool to hear it at 200hrs versus 100, a big diff to my ears.

thanks for the burn-in info Vinnie, i charged my battery & let it run down for burn-in, didn't even think to just leave Imod plugged into the charger all day.    Burn-in would've taken 1/2 the time!!!     Imod owners can just select Repeat All, select a playlist and plug Imod in for exactly 8.5 days?    that's much more palatable than waiting a few weeks like i did.

changing cords on Imod is just as important as trying difft cords with my sources.   a friend has a really nice custom made ipod cable and the Imod sounded so much better through it.   looks like my tax return is going toward audio related expenses, again...

Vinnie,

I did try the iMod as source to 2-channel home audio system when it was out of the box and found it very promising.  Now that it has spent around 100 hours playing into a load, I will put it back in there to see how it fares against the Altmann DAC.  Will keep you posted.

Hi Paul,

I'd love to hear your impressions about how the iMod compares to the Altmann DAC.  I heard them both and found that they actually have a very similar presentation (warm, sweet, musical, black background..).  The Altmann has more output voltage (the iMod is only 1Vrms), so you'll have to attempt to do some level-matching when switching between the two.  Keep us posted, and thanks!  :)

Vinnie, after burnin I'll put mine against one of your modded SB2 hooked up to a MHDT Paradisea nos tube DAC!  I don't expect the Imod to win but if it does I think I'll faint!

Hi Loftprojection,

Well, just make sure you are sitting down when you switch between the two!  aa
I think you'll be very surprised.  I am looking forward to your post as well!

He should at least have the courage to admit it and buy your company (for big bucks!) then sell the imod as an upscale ipod!  hahaha

Now your talking, and I like how you added "for big bucks!"  :green:

Hey Gooberdude,

Yes, the iMod is pretty revealing of the cable used.  I have found that a good silver cable works the best with the iMod.  For many other sources, I have preferred copper.

Thanks, guys!

Matt, you're right.  My iMod is either not broken in enough, or there's a mismatch between Imod and TVC, or I didn't do a good job matching output level.  I hooked the Imod to TVC last night, and while it sounded very clean and smooth, it didn't inject life into the system the way the SB2/DAC does.  As of this moment, I feel that the iMod/MPX3/headphones combo makes an excellent team.  And I also suspect the iMod/MPX3 (as active pre)/speakers will be a better performer than iMod/TVC.

Our TVC is all about component matching & sometimes that is the achillies heel of the TVC...   The Imod works great with my amp & TVC, but its signal is weak in comparison to my phono preamp, tv cable box or XBOX.    I usually listen at about 3 oclock on the dial with Imod whereas most other sources are pretty loud at 12 oclock.

Since its signal is only 1v though, i'd have no issues with running the TVC volume at 90%, it wouldn't hurt anything, your amp won't be driven too hard...

Have you tried Imod in your car?   Ever since doing so I can't help but think the Imod is a way better cd player for a car than ANY aftermarket auto cdp.  I was also wondering if IASCA is allowing entrants to use Imods as a source...  that's for another forum though.

let Imod burn in a while longer, changes occur

Yes, I tried the Imod in the car, and it sounds really good.  But, so far nothing can beat Imod/MPX3/headphones at night.  I can imagine someone takes an Imod to office, hook it up to a pair of desktop powered speakers and have fun all day long.

Hi Paul,

The iMod's output voltage is approx 1Vrms.  It can easily drive loads as low as 5k, but I'm not sure how it would work driving a TVC.  Is there a way you can try it in your home audio system without using a TVC?

We need to get you hooked up with a Signature 30... the iMod really
gels with it!  aa :green:  Just add your speakers (or AKG K1000 headphones if you want to take this combo outside to enjoy some fresh air and relaxation) and you'll have it made!

Yes, if you don't hear clipping, you can turn it up w/o any problem.

Thanks for keeping us posted,

Vinnie

OK, couldn't resist and had a very quick peak last night.  So, "RWA SB2 analog to RSA Tomahawk amp to W5000 cans" versus "Imod to RSA Tomahawk to W5000", Imod sounds a bit nicer and none of the components have yet finished their burnin!  I didn't go and put the Imod against the SB2/Paradisea in my speaker rig yet because it would not be fair but I am starting to be afraid the Imod might win!

Hi Gooberdude,

I am not surprised, and YES, it is fair to put the iMod up against the SB2/dac combo! :green:  It doesn't hurt to try (well, it might hurt a little)

Best regards,

Vinnie
