Speakers for Dynaco ST-70
« on: 15 Apr 2007, 08:04 am »
I built a set of the A/V-3's about 8 months ago and absolutely love them.  I recently acquired a Dynaco ST-70 Van Alstine modded tube amplifier and would like to give it a shot on a line array.  I would like to know if the OB-7's would be a viable option for this low powered amp.  I do have a second ST-70 if I needed on for each speaker, but it is not a Van Alstine, but is in the process of being modded.  My theatre room doubles as a listening room and I would like to use the A/V-3s just for HT.  The room is about 12'x20' with 8 foot ceilings.

heathmanc,

We had a modified Dynaco ST-70 drive the OB 5 model earlier this year at our Amp Comparo 2007. I believe the owner said it had the VT-70 driver board mod done to it, not sure what else. They had no problem driving the OB 5's at all. We were running a modified Squeezebox (with the opamps removed, which gives it only 1 volt output) directly into it without a preamp, and it was able to level match to the predetermined output levels of our comparo of 95 db at a distance of 8 feet in front of the baffle centerline with a feed of white noise. It still had some room to spare. Our listening venue was approx. 45' X 45' with 17' ceilings.

That's it on the top shelf, on the left, on top of the Sig 70 mono blocs. It sounded very nice BTW.

Cheers

Fantastic, that's what I wanted to hear.  I've got an PAS-3 preamp that will be used in this setup also.  Not the newest or best equipment around but I still love them.

The OB-7's and OB-5's have the same sensitivity range as the A/V-3.

We used a set of OB-7's in the 2006 digital amp comparison.

The little T-amp had no problem driving them to the same levels as the rest of the amps there.

No one suspected it was a single digit amp.  :D

In the 2007 digital amp shoot out we used a pair of LS-6 prototypes.

See info here: http://www.stereomojo.com/

Several of the integrated amps were single digit amps and they all easy drove the speakers to solid levels.
