I come home last night and the box is finally here.

A case of 2001 Brunello di Montalcino from Valdicava is finally here. After ordering 18 months ago, I now have them to DRINK!!!!!!! I have been saving a Kobe fillet for this occasion. Life is good.

Thank you very much. I will be enjoying this wine on special days for years to come if I can just keep my hands off. I can't normally afford wines at this price but I lucked out on a futures offering. Thank god for market imperfections. This wine doubled in price while awaiting delivery. I pat myself in the back for recognizing a deal and pouncing on it.

Over the Easter break my folks supplied me with another killer case of wine...its a bit of a prerequisite when i visit since they have about 4,000 bottles in their collection now.

Anyhoo, its all 2001 French reds, many from the Apellation 'chateneuf de pape'. I don't know much about wine, but is there a whole region in France called this? I presume its not just the Pope's old house & vineyard... I have 4 difft C de P bottles in my case, and the one you just posted isn't one i have either.

Futures definitely are the way to buy this stuff, right? my folks get on winery mailing lists just to be able to buy that way. A few times they've sold the cases before even recieving them, due to the rising markets & what not.

2001 a good vintage for CDP which is in Southern Rhone. They should drink well now. Only bad year recently is 02 which tastes more like Cotes du Rhone -- thinner. 2005 is suppose to be a great year rivaling '98 and '90. Look for 2005 futures.

do let us know if you come across any other 'finds'... i'm a huge vieux telegraphe fan although haven't had the chance to buy them in a while (been spending extra dollars on the system)... still think I have a 95-99 flight intact though

I have been a big fan of Pierre Usseglio CDPs. Even though the plain Cuvee only rates around 90 to 93, they consistently taste better than others in this range for me year in year out. I am guessing '05s should end up being around 94-95. At $28 it could be a bargain at this local wine store. http://www.bassins.com/wine/rhone/2005-rhone.php They ship as well. The vinsrare site http://www.vinsrare.com/index.php?main_page=product_vino_info&products_id=1563 only lets you order 1 bottle at $24.95.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that 2005 Monpertuis Cuvee Tradition may be a sleeper for wine of the vintage. The usual suspects -- special limited Cuvees from Clos des Papes, Beaucastel, Les Cailloux and even P. Usseglio's-- will garner high points but they will be expensive. At the Chicago Wine Company, you can get this at $45 pre-release. http://www.tcwc.com/s.nl/it.A/id.38520/.f On a great year like this, their vinification practice I think will produce a great wine.

These guys have some kind of hook up in southern Rhone. I don't know how they do it but under $20 for this wine is great. 01 may not be as good as 05 but it's no slouch. In fact, they are all good in the last 10 years except the horrendous 02. Plus, it should drink well now.

2001 Chateau de Beaucastel CDP

Even though it was a freebie from my folks i had to look it up before popping the cork. Sounds odd, but it gave off a vibe that begged me to do so. I'm not big on french wines but i've never read a description of a french red like the one's on the 'net for this bottle.

It sells for $80 now, bet my folks got it around $20.

If i didn't know any better it coulda been a good Cab from Spring Hill in Napa. Big, rich, low acidity...

I wish all the french wine i've tried tasted like this.

A 2000 vintage (comparable) goes for $100 and a 1997 (better vintage) goes for $125. It's a "bargain" for a "collectible" wine.

While this is a little too pricey to be my house red wine (that honor goes to Ravenswood's excellent Zinfandel), I recently picked up a case of Simi 2003 Landslide Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (http://www.simiwinery.com/wines/03LandslideVineyardCabSauv.asp) and I love it!

This is a really good wine that will go with lots of different types of meals or just after a long day at work.

Had a couple of bottles of it at a Maggiano's Little Italy at Tyson's Corner II in Virginia. It's really good with Lasagna.

I ordered it partly because I remembered this post.

BTW, Maggiano's charged surprisingly low for their wines -- most were less than 100% markup.
