Looking For New Speaker Cables
« on: 8 Apr 2007, 07:02 pm »
I'm looking for a pair of 3 meter bi-wire speaker cables to Connect my Atma-Sphere M60's to my VMPS RM40's. I was using cables from bettercables.com which I thought were good but not great so I decided to try some Canare Cables from bluejean cables. I'm not happy at all with the Canare cables. After about 100 hours I find them to be very constricted on the upper octaves and they show very poor transient response. I would like to spend about less than $500. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.

Two names seem to stand out quite frequently in this forum and others - Gregg Straley and Grover! I've heard really good things about Gregg Straley's speaker cables as well as from a gentleman, Grover, and his S (Signature) speaker cables. I have read of at least one gentleman over @ Head-Fi giving up his AZ Hologram SCs in favour of Grover's S cables! Would be interesting to hear from anyone in this forum who has tried BOTH speaker cables in his system and might care to compare them.

Best Regards
Dennis

I second Zybar's suggestion of Gregg Straley's Reality Cables.  I replaced 3m bi-wire Cardas Golden Reference with single wire runs of Gregg's cables.  I've used them on both tubes and solid state with excellent results.  They seem quicker and more open/transparent with good articulation at both extremes.

For now, I'll have to agree with those who've recommended Gregg's Reality SCs.  Grover said he was going to send a pair of SCs weeks ago, but I've received neither the cables nor an explanation for the delay.

The Reality SCs bettered far more expensive cables I've used and autioned.  Personally, I doubt there's anything out there offering a better price/performance ratio.  If anyone thinks differently, I'm all ears.  I *love* upgrading and saving money at the same time.

FWIW, and as always, YMMV.

With VMPS ribbons, Bolder Nitro is working out well.

The one and only speaker cable that seems to make a positive difference with any combination of components I've ever used it with - Alpha-Core Goertz MI-2.

Won't break your piggy bank, either

i agree the straley's are great cables, another brand that sounds great would be audio art sc-5 speaker cables.

Mapleshade Golden Helix speaker cables. Superb sounding & at $85 for an 8' run they are an absolute steal.

I want to thank everybody for their input. After reading all the responses and looking through some older posts I've decided to go with the Gregg Straley wires. I spoke to Gregg and he was very helpful. He stoppped me from ordering the extra layer of black coating and suggested jumpers instead of bi-wires (which would have saved me over $100). I look forward to getting the wires and will post my impressions once they arrive.

I come here to get a really good laugh at people spending mega bucks on cables and talking about how great they sound. Wow........how many of you have been buying $100,000 houses for $1,000,000 latetly too? I'm sorry but this place cracks me up. :duh: :thumb:

Good Luck with them.

I was going to recommend Anti-Cables or the Mapleshade product at around the same price. Both are outstanding. Glad to see you stayed in a reasonable price range for speaker wire.

Ohhh we're so glad you are amused, fiji  :)  We just live to make you happy.

As this is an enthusiast site, and people are enthusiastic about audio gear, they have certain beliefs that are not generally accepted by most members of society.  But, that's why a place like AudioCircle is provided...for enthusiasts to discuss their passions freely without getting rankled by know-it-all types like you.

My own personal beliefs on the efficacy of speaker cables or power cords is actually more in line with your thoughts than many here at AC, but I don't scoff at others for their beliefs.  I ask that you do not either.

If you cannot participate at AC without self-righteousness and smugness, please do not post further here at AC and look, and chuckle, at the members antics and beliefs from afar only.

Thank you,
