How to improve 2-channel movie sound?
« on: 4 Apr 2007, 11:36 am »
Hi,

My cheap and simple Music/HT setup :

PJ: infocus 4805
DVDP: Toshiba sd-360e
CD: bolder squeezebox
Amp: Trends ta-10
Spks: Hawthorne audio SI's

I love the sound I'm getting with my music, it's very clear and involving.  But when I watch a movie, I get earpain of the dialogue in movies.  I have to turn up the volume pretty loud to understand everyting but voices sound so muddy and scratchy :x

This is something I've always had with different DVD players and different setups ( all 2-channel).   But when I watch a movie on the computer the problem is not there  , I actually prefer my computer movie sound (using computer speakers)  over the movie sound I get from my setup !

Anyone with suggestions?   Should I get a good DAC for my dvdp?

Thanks

Robert

I would recommend messing around first with the DVD's audio settings.  My friend used to have to put his DVD player into surround sound mode (instead of two channel), which oddly enough made the voices stand out.  It doesn't make sense, but that's what he had to do.

Also, make sure that you've got things set - in the receiver or the DVD player - to use a phantom center / no center channel.  That'll make sure that the center information is being split and sent to your L/R mains along with the  left main and right main information.

the only audio options possible are :

1. the movie soundtrack ( sometimes 2.0 but mosly 5.1 DD )
This does not make a difference, I usually prefer the 5,1 mix

2. DVD player menu,  Digital output set on "OFF/ RAW/ PCM.  This does not alter the sound of the analog output ,

and there's a night mode wich just compresses the dynamic range for movie viewing at night at lower volums

Thanks for your help so far!

If you've got the output set to 5.1, then it is trying to send most of the voices to a center channel...and if you don't have a center channel, that might be why you find the voices to be absent or hard to hear.

It appears that you don't have a preamp...how are you swapping between the dvd player and the squeezebox?  I thought the TA-10 only had one set of inputs...

I change my IC's  :D    Eichmann plugs are to tight

on most dvd's there's no 2 ch. soundtrack,  the DVD player scales it down to two channels...  the dialogues are quite loud,  but  sound muddy and harsh,  I have to turn up the volume to understand them properly,  this is not because of my limited english, I don't have any problems with watching movies on my computer at low volumes.

Any other suggestions?  should I get a good DAC ?

Or a dvd player with analog surround sound outputs,  I could Hook -up a seperate center speaker and still use the normal stereo outputs  :thumb:
