NEW TUBE ADVISE???
« on: 2 Apr 2007, 04:19 am »
Hello tube gurus,

I have the Jolida 1000RC which come with Chinese made tubes would like to replace the tubes but since I am no expert in tube rolling I would like some suggestions. Thinking about changing the pre amp tubes and the regular EL 34 with KT77 however I dont know which brand to use that will yield the best performance and musicality. Also, I have the JD 100 Cd player as well. Lastly, any advise on cryo tubes?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Where do you want the sound to go from where you are?

I really like my winged SED EL34s.  They sound very smooth and nice. I've always like Yugo's for my pre-amp. The combo of SEDs and Yugos is very nice.

All depends on your budget. Mullards will place you in heaven. Remember that the NOS tubes are expensive and rare. Give Andy a call at Vintage Tube Service for some help. You will be happy you did. Upscale Audio as well can help. Be prepared to spend.

In my opinion, I find the Jolida stock tubes to be a bit on the muddy side.  I prefer the Electro Harmonix (tried the Mullards and to my ear, the EH's were better) - But I'm using them with the 302BRC, and that uses EL34s.  I find the EH's to be a bit brighter with a bit more definition and a nice tightening up of the bass.  Certainly more than the stock Jolida tubes.

My two cents worth - Good Luck!

Hey Robert,

i don't think you need tubes now either, your 1000RC impressed the heck out of me on Saturday...best tube amp (integrated amp) that i've heard.  the power & 'balls' of the 1000RC is something else.

Power cords + room treatments + an audio rack would do you a world of good & are what I'd recomend spending $ on next.    getting new tubes would be like buying a 2nd diving board when you don't even have the pool yet!!

In stock form, i'd be happy with your stock amp's performance for years...just get it a proper mount, and much more importantly, a proper power cable.

Once you can set the amp on a good floor amp stand, you will find the heaven you are looking for.  keeping that bohemoth on a thin glass shelf is bad...

The reason for new tubes suggestion is due to the fact that I may have a bad tube already in the amp so I was already thinking ahead since I have to test all the tubes out.  According to Jolida they state that I have a bad tube since my amp turns itself off.  The tech from Jolida inform me that the amp has a self protection mode and whenever their is a malfunctioning tubes it tends to shut the amp off.  The tech advise me to start with the tubes first before doing anything else.  The amp is under a 2 yr warranty but the tubes only have 6 months

Hello chgolatin2,
It does sound like you have a bad tube in there. Now there are a couple things to consider. For one, the Jolida amps do not have a preamp stage. The 12AX7 tubes are the first stage of what is basically a power amp. Input tubes. While these input tubes can make a difference, the other small tubes, the 12AT7 driver tubes, can and usually do make even a larger difference.
Also, you don't mention which tubes are in the amp now. Are they "Jolida" labeled tubes or Electro Harmonix? They have been supplied with either depending on the age of the amp. Either of these tubes can provide you with a very good presentation when mated with the proper input/driver tubes.
The problem is that describing one's personal preferences or what you consider "...the sound to literally take me to heaven...." is very subjective and never interpreted the same by others.
I would recommend a replacement pair of tube to replace the bad tube and maybe another and then do some playing with input/driver tubes. These will make a big difference and cost you a whole lot less than eight EL34 or KT77 tubes.
Now, as someone else has mentioned, this is all irrelevant if you have not yet chosen speakers or other components of your system.

I am having all of my tubes checked out by a tech, want to know if all the tubes are working correclty and like they should.  I have to agree with you that possibly I have a bad tubes.  Tube rolling can be fun but expensive as well, those Mullards are quite costly.  I will keep you guys posted on the progress.
