When will the "new improved" 14B SST be available ?
« on: 23 Mar 2007, 09:58 pm »
Hi all,

I know for a fact that there has been a new revision of the 14B SST, I believe it includes minor upgrades to output filter among other. My question is simple: When will this be public (I guess it's public now though) ? And when can I download the altered schema on the web so I can judge for myself if it is something I need to get Bryston to upgrade for me or not ?

Well if there really is one I'm sure James would let us know.  I believe you may be talking about the changes from the 14BST to the 14BSST?  If there really are changes James - let us know about upgrade availability.

I'm not talking about the 14B ST vs 14B SST.

Although the majority of people probably know that James Tanner is associated with Bryston, it would be nice to see your company info in your signature line, so that those that don't know, would.

James,

Go and have a chat with Chriss Russel, he will confirm that the output filter HAS been changed and also a few other modifications. The 14B SST has been revised, and if it has not - well then Bryston has lied anyway ;)

Take the safe route this time...

...but I have decided to jump of the Bryston Wagon, warrent and now this is just to much. O and the lack of DVD-player, HDMI and a bunch of other stuff - Bryston should have stayed with power amplifier only. That is what Bryston did best.

Hi All,

The only 'change ' I am aware of on the 14B is a (one of a kind change) in the output 'inductor'. We had a reviewer in Sweden who called to say he was reviewing the 14B and in his opinion it was the best amplifier he had every heard. He wanted to purchase one for himself and asked if the output inductor could be changed to provide a slightly higher bandwidth. We accommodated him and as far as I know that was the end of it. I guess there is no reason why we could not implement the change in all 14B's but the bandwidth is already from .5Hz to 130KHz.
Anyway calling me a liar is a bit extreme me thinks.

There has been discussions on whether some of the new technology in the new 28B might apply to the 14B but nothing has been done on that front yet. I repeat the 14B SST currently in production and being sold is as it always has been.

I find it very hard to believe that the sst series amp could be improved upon.I have tried some of the esoteric amps which were much more expensive but they flavour the sound while bryston simply  transmits truth. What more can you ask for? I also have the bp26 which I can never imagine selling. It is very simply the best preamp I have heard or should I say not heard.

Hi budt,

Well thank you for the kind words but as I have learned over the 40 years I have been doing this there is always room for improvement.

Interesting to  note though in terms of your comment about "transmitting truth". One of the tests this particular reviewer does in Sweden is a 'by-pass' test (not sure I understand exactly how it's done but I am finding out) where the amplifier under test is inserted  in the chain and listeners are asked if they can detect a sonic signature. The reviewer said this was the first amplifier in his many years of testing that could not be heard when inserted.
