Orb Audio Speakers: Any Good?
« on: 17 Mar 2007, 01:51 am »
I'm replacing all the electronics in my main stereo system and planning to move the old stuff to use as a secondary system in another room. I'm looking for new speakers to go with it, preferably not very expensive, and I'd like some help deciding what to buy. I've read some nice things about the Orb Audio Classic Two system (satellites plus a powered sub) which goes for a little under $700. I'm hoping someone out there who has heard them can provide some input.

Alternatively, I'd welcome ideas for other options to consider. I'm willing to go up to about $1000 for something specially good.

Hopefully,

Geezer, I would recommend the x-ls Bookshelf Loudspeaker and the Rocket ULW-10 Subwoofer from AV123. See links:
http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=82.1
http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=subwoofers&product=6.1
These products fit your $700 limit.
From the on line data, the Orb Audio Classic Two is missing a tweeter.
Not a good thing.

Thanks. I looked these up and they look good. But the sub is said to be for small to medium rooms. I'm not sure of their definition of "medium" but at 30X25 feet mine may be too big for the ULW-10. I may have to raise my $$ limit.

Geezer, I think that room size just blew your budget. Depending on how loud you listen to your music you may need a whole lot more loudspeaker or power or both. Even with my loudspeakers which have a sensitivity of 95dB I would want more than 125watts/ch to be on the safe side. I think you may be looking at at least two twelve inch subs to do the job. My original recommendation the
x-ls as a satellite may be inadequate for your room size as well.
Is this a basement room or is it above ground?

The room is my artist wife's studio, and it's above ground. You're right; I have to rethink. I've had a suggestion to use two of the ULW-10s, which would raise the cost quite a bit (not to mention going up from the x-ls). At that level I've got to give it much more thought.

Hi:

The Orbs Classic Two do not look like much, but they sound really good. There is a clarity to what is a very natural sound with a huge soundstage that they fool you into believing you are listening to a far larger system. They do not take a lot of space, but they can fill a small to medium room with high quality sound. Do not be concerned by the lack of a tweeter. The full range drivers in the Orbs are so good, you will not miss the tweeter. Check the reviews online (just type Orb Audio in Google) and the users' comments at AVSforum.com. Make sure that you consider opinions from people who have them and who have taken the time to let them break in and who have set them up correctly. You could probably get other speakers with better specs and lower prices, but the Orbs are a bit special for the person who wants quality sound at a relative low price and in a system that hardly takes any floor space. Notice that my comments are for the Orbs including the Super 8 subwoofer. A great little sub if ever there was one. Not the deepest or loudest, but highly articulate and musical. Good luck with whatever you decide to get!
