recommended 40 upgrades
« on: 13 Mar 2007, 07:59 pm »
Hey All,

I've got a pair of 40s and an LRC w/TRT's and FST.  Considering upgrading, and trying to sort through new cabinets, blackhole, external OXO, new midwoof, lambswool, CDWG etc.

I'm sure I want the new midwoof, which I think goes hand-in-hand w/the lambswool.  Having worked in a speaker cabinet shop before, I'm very sold on a more rigid cabinet, but maybe blackhole is enough?  Anybody upgraded to the OXO -- what was the difference?

An option as I may have to box up the 40s for several months is to simply send my drivers to Brian, and build an essentially new speaker around them (minus one midwoof).

What are experiences out there, what's made the most difference?

Thanks.

I highly recommend the midwoofer upgrade.  I have the wool, BH5, and CDWG, but haven't installed these yet.

I've added all the upgrades you've described over the past three years to my RM40's except the outboard cross over.  In my opinion this is the order of what makes the best improvement: 1) mid woofer upgrade, 2) CDWG, 3) blackhole, 4) lambswool.  I'm not sure I could hear a difference with the lambswool, but it was cheap enough, thus worth doing.  The mid woofer upgrade and blackhole upgrades are significant, especially if you like music with deep tight bass.

I also have RM40's with the older cabinets but stock crossovers compaired to yours.  At the time Brian just started using the the FST so it's mounted on a plate that fills the hole for the dual tweeters.  Just last week my upgrade midwoofers, additional crossover capacitor and four Blackhole 5 sheets finally arrived. I installed some cabinet bracing I made, I put two near the top and two near the bottom.  I definitely recommend these as genuine upgrades from stock.  Most noticeable is the mid bass IMPACT and lower bass in general.  The speakers just play louder now...cool.   rblnr I don't know how to upload pictures to here or to the gallery but I could send you some real decent pics by e-mail that I took while doing the makeover.
As for the lambs wool rblnr,  just to make sure your on the same page as everyone, the lambs wool is used only behind the ribbon midrange panels, not the midwoofers.  Brian's explanation one time was something to do with the density of the lambswool being too light for the bass section, so you keep the insulation that came in the speaker.

Thanks for the information, Harvey.  That was helpful.  If you have some pictures, you could send them to me, and I can post them.

Doesn't lambswool and/or the midwoof swap require a resistor switch?
