SP2 locking up
« on: 11 Mar 2007, 08:45 pm »
Hello all,

I am having a recurrent issue with the SP2 locking up. During this phase, the processor fails to respond to the remote and also to any of the switches except the soft power button and sometimes to the remotes power button. The Volume is either on MAX or Min and even if turned manually, the knob auto-rotates back to either full or min volume. The display reads '-14 db'.
In previous installation with a different SP2, a similar problem but the processor was in a remote location and we learned the hard way that if we used the remote to turn the sp2 off and then on again, the processor came on at full volume with predictable effects on the PMC OB1 and PMC center.
I have noticed that this problem seems to occur most often when I am changing cable channels (Motorola high def with digital recorder).
The processor is connected to Panamax voltage regulator.
Another issue is that I am loosing the first second or so of playback from the digital music server. It is connected to the SP2 via optical ( the only way I could get rid of pops/clicks with static discharges). The processor has digital lock enabled for this source.

Thanks for the help in advance.

I can't help you with your remote problem but I certainly feel for your digital problem.  I have the same thing happening to my and it is driving me insane.  I've tried the '093' code and although there is a slight improvement I find myself watching the display light up between tracks (SGNL detecting) and then missing the first few bars of the next track.  I have an extremely expensive DVD/CD transport and I am becoming ever more reluctant to use it.  Unacceptable.

Hi onthefly,

In my case the 093 code solved the delay and missing music problem. I entered the 093 code repeatedly untill the delay/mute was set to 0 sec. Thanks James.
Unfortunately, despite James Tanner kindly lending me a Torus power conditioner, the SP2 continues to lock up, muted, but with the volume knob rotated at either max volume and occasionally on min volume. The SP2 display then reads allocation error or -14 dB. None of the soft buttons work except the power on/off. I have to reboot the processor and while it is off manually turn the volume down before powering up.

Any thoughts? I know the Bryston is trying to find a solution.

How does entering 093 repeatedly change the delay?  My screen indicates digital force on but shows no delays.  I've tried entering it repeatedly but it makes no difference.  Is there a specific procedure?

I also have occasional problem with volume via the remote but haven't let this bother me too much.  In general I think the SP2 is a cracker  :D

If you watch the screen as you enter the code it will perhaps say 1.5.  Enter the code again and this time it will say 2.0.  It will go to 2.5, 3.0 and then 0.0.  I have tried every increment but it is still unacceptable.  I can only hope Bryston are working on a fix for this.

PS. You say your screen indicates digital force is on.  Could you explain this in more detail so I can check mine.  This is something I have not noticed.

Code 061 is Digital Force ON,
Code 062 is Digital force Off.

This Digital Force forces the SP2 not to look for an Analog signal and stay on the Digital signal when switching.

Code 093 is to set the Digital Delay from 0 to 3 sec.
Digital Delay delays the Digital signal to prevent any 'clicking noises' when switching inputs.

Make sure you hit the CODE button before entering each of the NUMERICAL codes.

The 'locking up' issue is not something I can comment on - it seems to be a system dependent problem. We can not get it to happen here at Bryston and I have not had any other reports of this locking up issue.

So if I have force digital on, is it generally better to have no delay or some to prevent clicking?

If there is no clicking then leave the delay at "0".

I have only found clicking on certain very badly designed Cable Boxes.

Also remember that these features operate "PER INPUT" - so you only need to use them on specific sources if required.

Thanks James,
Yes I only get clicking on my Humax PVR and can't get rid of it. It's only a mild nusiance so will not worry about it to much.
Cheers.

Hi James,

I do hope that the sp2 locking up issue is resolved upon moving and with the replacement of the motorola cable box with the satalite receiver. The other components appear relatively standard. Anyways, still a mystery for now.By the way, thank you for the use of the Torus.

Hi skammila,

Your welcome on the Torus.
I had your SP2 in this week and re-calibrated it - the dealer now has it and is testing it on his system.

We have all the parts arriving this month for the CD Player and expect to start shipping in mid May. I have to say the response to the CD player has been amazing - I guess there is still lots of room in the market for a state of the art redbook CD player.
