Open Baffle
« on: 9 Mar 2007, 09:19 am »
hi,

is it possible to have a passive open baffle with a full-ranger and bass support, i know it is difficult, but i really dont want to spend much

for the full-rangers i am looking at the Omnes Audio L8,
http://www.spectrumaudio.de/breit/omnesaudio/omnesaudioL8.html
It is an 8" wide range driver that covers roughly 100Hz-10Khz relatively flat, then that crossed to a supertweeter that comes in at around 10Khz, somthing like the Fostex FT17H.
http://www.spectrumaudio.de/hochton.html

then some cheap bass support, my room is only about 10-11ft square so i cant really use 15"ers, so i was looking at the Emimence Alpha 12, or Beta 12 to run at the bottom.
http://www.bkelec.com/Pro/Drive_Units/Eminence/Drive_Units.htm

this will hopefully end up like the Visaton NoBox but a lot cheaper and smaller, i also know about the new 10" Silver Iris coming out soon, and have read a lot about the Visaton B200, but mabye someone could clarify wether the rising FR is easy on the ears?

The speaker will be run from a 50w Teac A-BX7R amp, Teac VRDS10SE CDP, i currently use some Tannoy Cheviots at uni, which are good, but sometimes be a little to much for my room in the bass department.
For the sound- i prefere warm sounding to bright, and rather have nice tight bass that mabye lacks depth rather than any boom, somthing that like my tannoys, dissapear, have resolution, imaging but can play loud

and i listen to a lot of classic rock, indie rock, country, folk rock, easy listening so it needs to be fairly robust and able to play relatively loud without my ears hurting  :D and i am in the UK btw :)

Budget is around £300 ($600 ish but if i get from USA i need to factor delivery and tax etc into it)

thanks for reading, any advice?

Regards

With proper implementation the B200 is a wonderful driver. I have been using it for over 2 yrs now, and it still amazes me and all that listen to my OB's. Dont get sucked in to the graph interpretations. A graph will not give you real world results. :)

Happy Listening

Inrank,

Interesting driver combo.  Let us know how those L8's sound, if you go that route.  I'd go with the Alpha's instead of the Beta's, 2 per side if possible.  1st order passives work well with OB's.  I'd try the Tannoys freed of the box first.  Then all you might need to add is another woofer for some extra bass.

Never heard of Omnes Audio.  The L8 looks like an interesting  driver.  Here is a little more info from someone who has experimented with them.

:icon_lol: yup that 'Inrank' on there is me hehe

i found the 'spec' version i had there had too much treble, as it is boosted for that version, the normal version is a lot flatter but requires a supertweeter above 10Khz.

i have also tried my 12" tannoys in open baffle, very nice, but due to low Qts (0.2 roughly) there was not enough bass for me.
and i found it was missing somthing in the low mids, that has come back once i placed them in boxes, some reason it did not sound full in the midrange.

Inrank,

Here is a link to try: http://www.thomann.de/gb/visaton_b_200.htm .

I have heard the Omnes once only and in an aperiodic enclosure. It is OK but will not touch the B200.
The rising response is cured by the simple LR-circuit of the Mox-thread.

Hi these are the speakers I was also looking at awhile ago. I thought it cost to much for a pair shipped to my house. It would be around $285.00 or more a pair shipped to my house in michigan. So I am looking at other drivers for the price.
