I see nothing but caution in these threads all of the time. This isn't Sophie's Choice. Just take a shot. You're a big boy with research skills and a network of advisors to cull. You've figured out how to minimize the pain of a wrong decision apparently so just do whatever you're inclined to do. Even if you love the speakers you purchase, odds are you'll be doing this all over again in a year or two.

That is what I am talking about this is not a car or a house.  As for all the Salk folks I am sure they are awsome but I don't think I will get the bang I am looking for with the buck I am looking to spend.  Maybe one day I can have a nice pair of Salks but i am not there.  I am heading right now to a highend store to give different types of speaks a listen.  They don't carry anything I am looking at but I am interested in hearing some DeVore speakers as well as some others.

Beware the Super 8s!

Well I just got back for the store and man was that a mistake!  Those little super 8s blew my mind.  They are quite simply an amazing speaker.   Euphoric is how I would describe the midrange of those puppies.  We will have to see how this turns out.  Honestly they are perfect for me because of their size.  I would most likely add a sub just for the very bottom end.  We listened with and without a nice REL and it sounded very good.   
Also listened to some 3k Dynaudio monitors that were very good but had no chance against the Super 8s.  Oh woe is me what to do?

Just noticed SP Tech has some remaining Timepiece 2.1 in the studio finish going out at a special clearance price.  Maybe you could find a dealer for one of those near you to audition them.

Think Nines

I would highly recommend checking out the DeVore "The Nines" - I own the super 8s and I've heard the Nines a few times. The Nines are only slightly larger (2" deeper and 4" higher. Nearly the same width) and have a side-firing woofer. They'll give you that extra bottom end and then some. Worth a listen imho especially if you were diggin the 8s.

I don't think I can pull the trigger on those quite yet. A) I need to sell my current speakers and B) I think I may save a bit and wait for another pair of the supers to come up.  Tempting though.  The Zus are still in the plans because even though i loved the DeVores i have never heard the Zus so how do I know if i would love them?  The low risk is making me try them out.

    You might want to go listen to some Phase Technology 9.1's..... I think they are one of the best sounding speakers at any price!!  These speakers cost $2200 but you can get them a lot cheaper at http://www.hifitrader.com
