Using USB attached DAC with Windows XP
« on: 14 Feb 2007, 10:31 pm »
I currently run my computer with the built-in SoundMax system on the motherboard.  I want to add a USB DAC/Headphone amp and can't find anyone who knows how to configure it.

What I REALLY want to do is have everything BUT my player software (I am using SlimServer with SoftSqueeze but will switch to other software if it supports flac) use the SoundMAx and attached speakers.  I want my music to go to the USB attached DAC so I can listen through headphones without the beeps and bloops the computer makes.

Thanks.

To eliminate the beeps and bloops:
Control panel  > Sounds and audio devices > Sounds  > choose Sound Scheme "No sounds"

One of the first things I do when I sit down at a PC!

Number One for XP is un-mapping the USBTD from XP and the dreaded Kmixer.

Go Control Panel => Sound and Audio Device => Select Hardware Tab => Select USB Audio
Device => Click Properties Button => Select Properties Tab => Select the audio device =>
select "Use audio features of this device" and "Do not map through this device".

Foobar is a fine playback manager, but you need to select the output device “USB Audio
Dac/Device” and work through the myriad of choices. When in doubt, just reset to default
and go from there.

First.  Thank you for the solution to my problem.  Even with my rudimentary knowledge of PC configuring, this makes sense.

As for Foobar, I have downloaded it and only have one question.  How do I find the "output ""USB audio DAC/Device"" tab.

Thanks

Another way to do this is using an ASIO driver to bypass the kernel entirely.

ASIO4All is a good XP driver, it works well with the Foobar plugin called foo_asio.
