Will do, if it sounds as well as it looks...... :D

I plan to test them on a couple of SS amps, PP and SE tube amp. By the time that's done, I'll probably want to do some mods, for the sake of experiment, if nothing else....

I'd be intrigued to hear his take on the Zu Druid:

or his $5000 home theater:

Yup...and, frankly, I am surprised that he still makes $300 speakers  :icon_surprised:
Probably not for long, as he probably makes very little money on them. It does not take 48x more work to make $16k boxes.

Hey!

Boris, looking good for $300 :D So, keep us posted on how they sound.... they will work well with your SE amp for sure

Waw, looks darn good for so little money... mhnnnn, very tempting... I was thinking of trying the single driver thing after hearing Buddy's last year.
Boris, keep us posted on the sound when it breaks-in...

Well, if you like what you've heard than you should get yourself a horn loaded Fostex. aa

If I have time I could help you build a pair... as long as you can live with the size of it :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

If you look at his home theater set up I linked to above, you see he's charging $800 each for additional speakers. This would suggest that is you were to eliminate 3 speakers and just go with a pair and a pair of powered subs, that should cost $5000 - 3 X $800 or $2400 for a remainder of $2600 for a 95 dB efficient, 400W handling pair with 2 dual 12" powered subs. Looks pretty cost effective if the talk isn't hype.

These drivers/prices make for some very tempting speakers.

The 6.5 inch aerogels used in the HT speakers would be similar to the Ascend Acoustics CBM-170's (highly regarded standmount two-ways at $340/pair).

The Fostex FE127E and 167E drivers are used in Cain & Cain and Omega products (at two or three times the price).  I prefer either over the Fostex FE206E with it's hot midrange and low Qts.  So I like his choice of drivers.

Keep in mind that cabinet design primarily only affects frequencies below 150 Hz, so the choice of cabinet design (if properly done) is secondary to the driver, especially in a single driver design.  Proper cabinet choice should be based on synergizing (matching) to the driver, not an blanket preference for the type.  It looks like these designs avoid pushing bass response too deep (and trying to push the Xmax/bass output energy beyond what by nature extended range drivers have a hard time doing).

Adding a powered sub is the logical choice for most any extended range driver/single speaker (or many other designs as well).

That is what I'm planning to do, eventually (when I get familiar with the speakers). There is a lot of info on Audio Round Table

I have a pair of these Tekton monitors in red for the bedroom and they're fine for jazz vocals.

They're no contest compare to Silverline Audio SR-12  :duh: very good midrange but missing the top air and shy in the bass that the SR-12 very good at. But for the bedroom music they're fine at low valume and match well with the Mingyue EL84 ( 15w ).

Hey Guys,
We heard the Cain & Cain wall of sound recently at one of the Rave meetings. This speaker is a must listen if you like SETs. I believe they cost $2800.
Boris you missed out that day. By the way I am still waiting for you to cotact me about your amps. Guess you forgot.

Yeah, I'm sorry to have missed that  :( But I heard Buddy's horns with his Welborne's and Chris's K&R monster amps - good stuff, I could live with that  :D. Made me think of higher power SE stuff

Rollo, I sent you a PM re amplifiers.

I came across the Tekton line doing some price shopping and product reviews on Ebay.  Quite interesting line of product especially for $300 price tag, honestly I dont know how they sounds since I am kinda big on the bass dept however I was looking into them for a master bedroom setup and my home gym.  Hmmm, I wonder how they will sound with tubes hmmmmmm?

Boris:

How do you like the Tekton Design speakers? I am considering a pair for an office system and pairing it with a Trends TA-10.1 Class D amp or an Almarro A205 MkII single ended pentode integrated amplifier. Please provide a brief review if possible.

Thanks,

Rich

I have the speakers in ''break-in" mode, for the last 10 days - running them 3-5 hrs a day face-to-face, driven by an SS amplifier. They have ~40 hrs of run time and people advised me that they need ~200hrs. If I get a chance, I'll do a brief listening tomorrow, and then keep break-in till the next weekend.

I will use a solid state amplifier and SE tube amplifier for listening. Will keep you posted  :thumb:

After ~40 hrs of break-in, I run a quick comparison between my old Infinity Reference Series 2000.3 and the Tekton.

The amplifier was a 50W SS AIWA amplifier with surprisingly good sound (the one used for break-in).

First impression is that bass with the Tektons is little thin, I am not sure if the 50Hz low frequency end is quite right (my guess is 70-80Hz, but I may actually test it at some point as I want to add a sub later on).  Infinitys are smaller, bass-reflex port is also a lot smaller, but their bass is deeper and more dynamic. However, one thing that I appreciate with the Tektons is that whatever bass they output is clean and tight, I'd rather have tiny but clean than rich and muddy bass. Well, you can guess I ain't a bass freak.

Highs seem little stressed and bit harsh (not sure if it's all in an insufficient break-in or the box resonance, which is not negligible, also plays a role). Female vocals are not impressive but Ray Charles sounds UNBELIVEABLE :D :thumb: Very interesting and now I have to do more listening with male vocals. Mighty Sam McLain comes to mind. Johnny Cash, anybody?  Well, why not, let's see (my first JC CD is on its way)

Again, as Infinity speakers are generally smooth and sometimes sound as if they have a veil over the midrange, comparison is relative, only absolute statement for now is regarding the dynamics and bass extension.

Keeping in mind the low price and low hours, I have ways to go, but for the next week I'll use the Tektons in my bedroom system, now trying to break-in my ears and do reverse comparison with Infinity.

Sounds like a (lack of) break-in issue. The missing bass doesn't surprise me, Fostexes don't really open up in BR's IMO, but you should have stunning female vocals :)
