Wow, how does it synergize with the ZUs? They're up there on my wanted list.

The pre-amp is necessary though eh? I've found with my TVC, the Trends sounds much better.

Next week sometime for another session? I'm pretty sure you'll wipe the Zu's off your list after experiencing the Hawthorne SI's... I can sell my subs. haven't played them in a week.

i'll send you a PM about trying out the acoustic treatments, that would be a very good idea... i'll bring 'em over if you supply the tape to hold them up. duct tape should be fine.

the SI's with the Trends should be really interesting.

Robert1325, have you tried felting your baffles?? Getting the SI's to do their thing properly is all about controlling reflections & vibrations.... make it so your baffles essentially 'aren't'. $10 to felt both baffles twice over.

felting, you mean the whole baffles? I wouldn't know where to get that stuff... maybe on at the local market or something

I'm also planning to get the top of my baffles round ( just like yours) and a bit lower at the floor.

Robt,

See if you can felt the entire baffle, make it as acoustically transparent as possible. You should have a fabric store nearby....a place to buy bulk amounts of fabric. Ask them for felt & buy the 100% polyester kind. Cover everything on the baffle EXCEPT the SI. just use simple spray adhesive to attach the felt.

Here in the U.S. 100% polyester felt is $5/yd and real 100% wool felt is $15/yd.

My baffles each required 1 yard of felt, and have a double layer. Just one layer will show you what it does though... spend $5 & prove me wrong!! just kidding, but its more than worth it.

Rounding the top is another great idea, just a 2" lip around the SI is all that's needed. I'm thinking about trimming mine down too by increasing that 2" lip around most of the SI but leaving a 3" wide piece of the baffle to act as the 3rd leg. Essentially, it'll look like Darrel Hawthorne with that huge Goatee (beard).
Your baffle is WAY too big IMO. If you have not gasketed the drivers, this is another good thing to be done for $2 or less per driver.

You should ground the woofer baskets too...

Already grounded the woofer, seems a bit clearer sounding now. Haven't done the screenectomy yet. I'm saving up money for a tvc, don't know wich version to go for yet...

Are you going to try the trends --tvc --SI combo sometime? I would be very interested in the results

I bought a T10.1 about a month ago and disbled the volume pot and put it in my living room system to see how it would sound w/ the Minimax preamp and the Hemps. The high frequency hash most likely from the switch mode PS pretty much spoiled things. You could tell there was plenty of power for the Hemps, good bass and terrific detail retrieval but the grain and hash were awful. I located a linear power supply on Digikey p/n 179-2036-ND LINEAR SUPPLY 12V/3.4A OUTPUT . They won't have it in stock until June so I'll put connectors on that and give it another shot. The actual cost on what started out as $100 lark is now nearly $200 total. hmmm

And the stock caps don't help the highs either . Depends on what your used to ofcourse... my hawthornes are not the most prominent in the highs.

I am still digging mine and I think it is mellowing out a bit(or it could be me). My cap upgrades SHOULD be here today or tommorow so I will see what that does. Either way for $130 you can't go wrong.

I have a new pair of hemp drivers as well. I bought the trends as a curiousity and to do break in for the hemps. I agree totally with the quote above. At this time ive only got 40-50 hours on both the hemps/ and trends. So dont know which componnent the high freq. hash is attributable. Too bad i cant change a cap myself. anyway ill give it another 40 hours

Unless you want the challenge of a DIY project, why purchase a module without a case, connectors and power cord when you can get a complete stand alone unit from Astron, Pyramid and other manufacturers for about the same price?

So what are the technical parameters of the Astron, Pyramid, Samlex, Tripplite and/or Pyle powersupplies? Barring the fact that these 12v supplies actually produce 13.8vdc, I've been unable to suss out any technical data. If you do a search on Astron, you'll find that they are rather unreliable, or at least that is the consensus of Hams. While I know the Astron uses the 723 regulator, just like the Condors, Power Ones, International Power supplies, there is far more to a ps than the specific regulator chip. These open frame supplies are certainly not state of the art, but have proven themselves with their longevity and reliability, and documented ripple, load regulation, etc....
That being said, these low cost housed supplies might well be ideal. I wouldn't know.

Basically, I was looking for a linear supply which matched the known parameters. Maybe the the amp will be fine w/ 13.8 volts but I don't know that. If I don't put it in a case, it can be hidden fairly easily. attaching leads should be a piece of cake.
Getting rid of the switcher may not clean up the noise but I have a strong feeling that it will.

I'll have a TA-10.1 too in the AudioRoundTable Group Build Room driving the ART Arrays (AudioRoundTable Group Build Line Arrays). I'll also be using a pair of Monarchy Class A zero feedback monoblocks and an Ella EL34 tube amp, so it will be possible to compare the TA-10.1 to 140 watt ss amps and a 20 watt triode-wired tube amp.
