Special news: Help earthquake victims by supporting Jazz For Japan
« Reply #181 on: 26 Mar 2011, 09:08 am »
On March 23 and 24, top musicians in Los Angeles gathered to Capitol Studios in Hollywood and recorded a charity album to help those affected by the recent earthquake/tsunami in Japan, and I was invited to observe a part of the recording process.

This project was conceived by producer Larry Robinson, formerly a jazz drummer and now CEO of Avatar Records. Musicians who donated their time and talent to the cause include Steve Gadd, Nathan East, George Duke, Marcus Miller, Billy Childs, Larry Goldings, Peter Erskine and Christian McBride.

The music will be released immediately on iTunes worldwide, and a CD release in Japan is planned. The producers are also thinking about releasing the HD video material through broadcasting in Japan and the US and as a disc for sale in the future. All proceeds will be donated to a Japanese relief organization.

As a music lover, you can help the Japanese earthquake victims by supporting the "Jazz For Japan" project. If and when the CD is released, Eastwind Import will surely help distribute it worldwide. Meanwhile, please buy the soon-to-be-released album on iTunes (if you do iTunes) and spread the word!

As a Japanese citizen living in the US, I'd like to say a big "THANK YOU!!" to Larry Robinson and everybody involved in this wonderful project.

I've posted a detailed report on the recording session I observed on March 24 on the Eastwind Import Blog (http://blog.eastwindimport.com/). Also, you can follow the Jazz For Japan project on its Facebook community (http://www.facebook.com/JazzForJapan).

Thank you for your consideration and kind thoughts,

Hajime Sato

A worthy effort, I hope it's very successful.

Just a note to add that I recently purchased a product from Hajime Sato at Eastwind Import and the service and communication were first rate, highly recommended.

Sounds  like a must-have album for jazz lovers, 1 which I'll definitely be looking for. The fact that it'll benefit Japan in their time of need is a thoughful bonus indeed.  :notworthy:

Jazz For Japan Charity CD now available!!

Various Artists / Jazz For Japan (2CD)

Steve Gadd, Lee Ritenour, Marcus Miller, Tom Scott, Billy Childs, Christian McBride, Peter Erskine, Alex Acuna, Alfonso Johnson, Larry Goldings, Chuck Berghofer, Bob James, Keiko Matsui, David T Walker... These and other top jazz musicians gathered at the Capitol Studios in Hollywood on March 23 and 24 to record a very special charity album. All of them have special appreciation for Japanese fans who have enthusiastically supported jazz, the uniquely American art form jazz.

Producer Larry Robinson of Avatar Records conceived the idea of a charity CD and in less than two weeks, the two-day recording session was in progress, thanks to the Capitol Studios and others who generously donated the studio time and volunteered their time. Nobody involved in this project, from recording engineers and caterers, made a dime, and the musicians played their hearts out, thinking about their Japanese friends and hoping to make a positive impact through music.

I was fortunate enough to be in the studio on March 24 to witness the recording (you can read my report here, and I am extremely happy now to make available the resulting album to my customers. I don't have to tell you the caliber and musicianship of those who participated in the recording. The 2-disc set includes 14 tracks, all great performances of jazz standards, both in straight ahead and contemporary flavors.
