New Arrivals at Eastwind Import

Introducing SSJ Records

SSJ Records is a new Japanese jazz label. Mr. Yasuo Sangu has been running the Sinatra Society of Japan -- one of the largest official Frank Sinatra fan club in the world -- for a long time, but he could not contain his love of jazz and decided to launch his own label. Mr. Sangu licenses existing American jazz albums (many of them self-produced), excavates historical gems and produces new recordings.

Eastwind Import welcomes SSJ Records to its family of independent labels, and is proud to introduce some of their best CDs to the international market.

Greg Fishman / Indian Summer

Jackie Paris / The Jackie Paris Sound
One of the definitive works of the song stylist, originally released by East-West Records and long out of print, is finally released on CD for the first time ever! [Rec. 1957-58]

Beverly Kenney / Lonely and Blue
The talented singer left only six official albums in her short life time, but SSJ found an unlikely source material: transcription records made for radio stations. Another world premier release for fans of Beverly Kenney! [Rec. circa 1952]

New Arrivals - Big Band Special

Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band
If you are a fan of big bands, you know the historical importance of the Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band. The Los Angeles-based band not only kept the big band tradition alive in the 1970s and 1980s (tough years for jazz musicians in general), but changed the landscape of large jazz ensembles by bringing innovations. (Akiyoshi and Tabackin moved to New York in 1982 and formed a new band called Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra Featuring Lew Tabackin.)

The band was very unique in that they only played the original compositions or arrangements by Toshiko Akiyoshi. It was an amazing achievement, considering that even Duke Ellington's band sometimes played "standards" or someone else's arrangements. It also had a very strong soloist in Lew Tabackin, the co-leader and life partner of Akiyoshi.

With many other brilliant musicians such as Bobby Shew, Bill Reichenbach, Gary Foster and Bill Perkins, their technical skills and tight ensemble work were second to none. Recently remastered, and some of them being the world premier releases on CD, the series of reissue CDs is a worthy addition to the collection of all big band fans!

Eric Miyashiro is a Hawaii-born trupmeter who's worked with Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman and countless other groups. His techniques, brilliant tone, and ability to hit the high notes cleanly and effortlessly are well known.

Miyashiro moved to Japan more than 10 years ago, and gathered a top-notch Japanese studio musicians to form the EM Band. Known for superb execution, contemporary sensibilities, tight ensemble work and wild and festive live performances, the EM Band has steadily been gaining recognition in Japan.

Eastwind Import is proud to present the band's two CDs. They are fast, tight, fun, and full of surprises! If you are a fan of big bands, you must check them out!

Touché Music is a small Swedish label which chooses its projects with impeccable taste. They tap into the wonderful talent pool of Swedish jazz musicians including Jesper Lundgaard, Mads Vinding, Palle Danielsson and Bobo Stenson. Their lovingly prepared CDs have great production values, most notable of which is the sound quality. We have selected seven titles for their debut at Eastwind Import.

Ulf Adåker Quintet / Monk By Five
Ulf Adåker Quintet / Mingus By Five
This all-star quintet is led by trumpeter Ulf Adåker and includes star players such as Bobo Stenson (piano) and Palle Danielsson (bass). They pay tribute to great jazz composers -- Monk and Mingus -- and put their own spins on the straight-ahead, hard-bop tradition!

Jesper Lundgaard and Mads Vinding / Two Basses
Jesper Lundgaard and Mads Vinding / Bassments
It's not easy to make a good, bass duo album. How many can you think of? These two master bassists did it not only once, but twice. Their technical facility and musicianship are simply astonishing. These superbly recorded CDs will also be excellent to test the bass reproduction capabilities of your audio system!

Anders Persson / Lonely Fungus
Pianist Persson, in company with the seasoned bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Terje Sundby, has made a fabulously absorbing and very beautiful record!

Jesper Lundgaard Trio / Plays Cornelis
With an interesting instrumental combination of bass, sax and guitar, the trio explores the music of Cornelis Vreeswijk, a revered, Swedish singer-songwriter.

Hajime, the scope of your musical offerings is almost overwhelming! One could spend hours deciding what to purchase.

Over one year ago you offered some suggestions on contemporary jazz:

"If you like cutting-edge, very modern European jazz:
- Mirabassi Boltro Ferris / AIR
- Antonio Farao / Borderlines
- Jean-Philippe Viret / Considerations"

This is the kind of jazz I enjoy. Do you have any more suggestions?

Thanks for a great site.

- Giovanni Guidi Trio / Tomorrow Never Knows
- John Di Martino Romantic Jazz Trio / Magical Mystery
- Zane Musa / Introducing Zane Musa
