Givent the lead time on a new pair I'd think you wouldn't have much trouble selling your pair, if you eventually are so inclined.

Congratulations - great looking pair of speakers.

When you get a chance would you take a pic with the grills off and also a pic of the rear.

Best of luck with them.

Below is a picture of the rear of the speaker.  The controls you see allow for matching the internally powered sub to your main amp as well as giving you 11 bands of eq between 20-100Hz.  There is also a rear firing tweeter for added ambiance which I won't be using.

I'll try and get a picture sans grills later today.

Jeeeez George very nice indeed!

I hate to say it but I'm jealous! I love my current speakers but I must admit I have always wanted a pair of 5A's!

ENJOY!  :D

Congratulations!  5As and the Moscode amp is quite a combo!

Here’s a hint on setting up the bass response of the 5As: start with the crossover boxes.

I discovered this when helping my friend hook up a Moscode 401 to his 5As.  We set the 5A level and EQ pots to 0, the bass contour to 1, and the crossover box impedance to 100k as this is the input impedance of the amp.  This sounded very good but the speakers didn’t seem to have the weight and slam that I would expect.  When I measured the response with a sound meter and test tones (as recommended by Richard Vandersteen) the response dropped by about 10db below 60 Hz.  This result is probably room related.  We experimented with different impedance settings on the crossover boxes and found that the 10k setting brought the low bass up to within 2db of the mid bass.  From there we were able to fine tune using the 5A bass level and e.q. controls.  Now it’s sounding phenomenal.

George,

If you're using a TACT to set up the 5A's, I wonder what would happen if you removed the crossover boxes and let the TACT build the pre-power amp bass filter slope?  I don't see any risk to this, other than the time it takes to try it.  The reward would be one less link in the chain.

If you try it, let me know how it turns out.

Could you post some pics of them w/ the grills off?  The pics on the Vandersteen website stink.

Russ,

I used a volt meter and measured the response at the speaker at both 1000Hz and 100Hz in order to determine the optimal setting on the crossover.  While 100k sounded very good, 75k sounded and measured even better!!!

This weekend I will continue to work on speaker and listener placement to get things as flat as possible before working on the EQ settings.

Russ,

I am no longer using the TacT and will actually be putting it up for sale this weekend.  Instead, I run my Bolder Cable modified (full analog mods) SB2 directly into the Moscode.  This allowed me to remove a few links in the chain... :green:

Cool. I'll look forward to your observations between the two speakers.

I'll have the opportunity to run my Bolder modded SB 3 into the Moscode and into GR Research OB 5's in a few weeks, after hearing your impressions, as well as others, I'm looking forward to it.

Cheers

BTW, I have the bass flat to 25Hz in room now.   :thumb:

I need to work on a few big suckouts at 60Hz and 80Hz, otherwise I am well within EQ range.
