Opinions needed for a potential mod
« on: 24 Dec 2006, 12:09 am »
It has been suggested by some, that if one has an older component whose Power cord is fixed to the chassis (ie hard-wired) that modifying the unit with a new IEC input is a good idea because that would allow for a better, after market Power cord.
This mod is, of course, not a simple task.
A company in the U.K. called Russ Andrews, which specializes in Highend cables sales, suggests another approach.
It goes like this.  They suggest cutting the existing power cord and leaving 3 inches of cord.  They them suggest wiring an IEC connector to the cut leads, which of course would then allow for any cord to be used.
My question is:  If the use of a better power cord reduces the RF/EMI noise compared to the original cheapo cord, what affect would those last 3 inches have?
Any comments?

The purist would wire the power cord back into the chassis exactly as the factory power cord.  (Eliminating any connection is a good thing.  And he'd do the same with his entire system.)

The "do it right" guy would cut the bigger hole in the back panel and install the IEC plug there.

The lazy dude would do as Russ Andrews suggests. (Unless you're moving from the US/Canada to Europe or may want to upgrade from 15 amp to 20 amp power cord I don't see a need for the suggested flexibility.)

I agree with JLM, and would like to add that the only reason to have a IEC outlet is if you are going to powercord swap or roll. I have replaced the captive cords on my Dynaco Mk.IV amps, at which time I eliminated the power switches, with 14awg cables custom sized to my installation.  8)
