Noob question about Mac and external drives
« on: 21 Dec 2006, 12:51 am »
I'm using a Mac as my transport, storing files on an external drive and navigating the whole thing with iTunes/Front Row.  I am set up as administrator on the computer.  My other half has her own seperate acct on this computer.  Her iTunes folder does not contain any of my music files and visa versa.  I'm wondering if I purchase her a seperate hard drive and leave both external hard drives plugged in, can I set the system up such that her files go into her drive automatically without her having to tell iTunes which hard drive to place the music and when I have my admin acct open my files go into my drive automatically?

Thanks for any tips you guys, I am trying to be a nice guy and share but I hate finding mp3's on my drive .

Peace

Sure, it's all about which folder you tell itunes to point to.  In fact you could both share the same hard drive, just create two higher root folders (Christof and Other Half's).  You still will have seperate music files, just sharing the space to hold them.

Each of you can set your iTunes preferences however you like. In the Preferences>Advanced>General tab, the first thing you'll see is the "iTunes Music folder location". Plug in, format and name your external drives and you can set the location to be one of those drives. No sharing required.

Sweet!  I hate getting edgy over my lack of understanding of this machine.
