I am right into my McAlister SE 44 SET.  http://www.mcalisteraudio.com/

This thing brings top shelf sound for peanut dollars.

has anyone tried their ML33 preamp (line plus phono)

looks like tremendous VFM for 899 dollars.

except that it has s-load of tubes, a nightmare to roll

Actually, Peter says tube rolling does not change the sound much on his gear. So not really an issue.

I know Boead has one of his pre's and just loves it. He is the one who turned me on to the McAlister gear in the first place.

The guy who I got the SE 44 from had one of his pre's as well and seemed to like it quite a bit.

If the pres are anything like the amps, and they should be, then they offer top shelf sound for reasonable dollars.

A VTL ST 150 (which I own). This despite the fact that those who head up VTL think those who purchase their amps 2nd hand are the lowest of the low :x

I would have to go with my Sound Quest sq-84 integrated amp so I'm biased. Great sounding amp that I can actually afford. Makes a fine headphone amp as well.

Enjoy.
