Help with SP1.7
« on: 15 Dec 2006, 02:43 pm »
I have been experiencing a weird intermittent problem with my SP1.7 for the last year and it only happens upon power up.  If I am watching a DVD in DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 or the listening to a SACD / DVD-audio using the 5.1 bypass mode my sub-woofer does not get any signal for the first 20 minutes.  Once the SP1.7 warms up the sub will get a signal.  Typically after 20 minutes of playing I hear a rumble from the sub (will last for a second or 2) and then the .1 material starts to play.  This happens with any DVD / SACD I use.  However, this issue does not occur everytime.  Approximately 1 out of 3 or 4 time the sub will get the signal right on power up.  I have plugged the sub directly into the DVD players sub output and the sub works fine.  I have used a different preamp and this issue does not occur.  So I am certain that the SP1.7 is causing the problem.

I have the following setting configured on the SP1.7:
L/R Large
Center small
LS/RS small
Back none
Sub Yes - Xbass On
Crossover 80Hz

I have the latest software 44F installed on the SP1.7.  I believe that I will need to send the preamp back to Bryston.  But, I just want to make sure I have not over looked anything before I ship it back.  Thanks.

Georgev:

I have had the same problem ever since I upgraded my SP-1 to the SP-1.7,
except my sub's signal  would come and go. The SP-1 worked fine.
I found that switching to the
balanced sub output fixed the problem (I'm using a passive sub powered
by a 4B-ST). I discussed this with James probably about four years ago.
I could have sent my SP-1.7 in for service but I decided to get it looked
at when I did the next upgrade since my system was working fine with
the balanced connection. I always assumed that it was a thermal problem
with the analog circuitry, now I'm not so sure. If you're not using a balanced
connection to your sub at the moment, do you have a way to try it ?

James: Has this become a known issue with the SP-1.7 ?

Thanks, Steve

Steve,

Thanks for your quick response and advice.  My powered sub only has RCA inputs so I will try a XLR to RCA converter and I'll connect my sub this way to see if the issue gets resolved.

Hi Steve,

No I have not purchased the XLR to RCA converters yet.  What I have been doing is simply turning on the SP1.7 20-30 mins before I want to use it.  This way the sub works right away.  I was hoping that James would add some insight here.

George.
