Modified Elpac Impressions
« on: 26 Oct 2006, 03:15 pm »
I picked up one of Wayne's modified Elpac power supplied for my SB3 a month or so ago.  I had been hearing about these for a little bit and figured I had to check one out :)

The system with the SB3 installed is a bit cobbled together at the moment... prototype x-sls speakers from av123 (where I work), a pre-amp and amp I'm not allowed to talk about ( ;) ), an Onix xcd-88 and a few other items.

Anyway, I have to say that this is one great upgrade for the $$.  Being a modder myself (www.skiingninja.com), I'm always looking for the best improvement for the least amount of cash outlay and I wish *I* was selling this thing.

In comparison to the stock power supply, the modded Elpac has a lower noise floor resulting in better detail retrieval and obviously superior bass.  Placing the stock PS back in the system, I was treated to a stark presentation... the 'life' was gone...lower detail...bass was not as clearly defined...instrumental separation was degraded and overall presence was lacking.

I know there are already several threads here about this modded PS but I figured one more can't hurt and Wayne is such a great guy so here I am :D  Thanks for the great product Wayne!
