SB-3 - Wired Better than Wireless?
« on: 23 Oct 2006, 03:12 pm »
JLM said a while back he preferred his SB wired over wireless.  Well, I tried mine with a 50-foot cable and I sure like it better.  Bass seems a bit fuller and everything is more saturated.  I didn't find it thin before but it sure sounds better now.

I'm a little afraid of going back and forth, as I'm worried the setup protocol will go awry and I'll be awash on the Sea of Incompatibility for all time.

I was getting 70% signal strength with the wireless without undue fluctuation and really never experience dropouts.  So, I think the wireless setup was pretty well optimized.

I set the cable up through the router.  Any downside to this?

Similar experiences?  Contrary?

Ive tried both wired and wireless in my brothers system and noticed no difference. Im not an audiophile by any means and I usually cant tell minor differences anyway. As an IT guy though, wired vs wireless on paper shouldnt make a difference as the 0's and 1's whether they are transmitted wireless or not, are still 0's and 1's.

Maybe because I went in thinking there wouldnt be a difference that explains why I didnt hear a difference, then again maybe because you thought there would be a difference, you heard one. Maybe there was a difference and regardless of what it says on paper, you prefer the sound of one to the other. Thats the beauty of audio and the wonders of the brain.

If there's a difference, it wouldn't be due to incorrect data. The difference would likely be due to noise generated by the wireless circuit in the SB and the extra power drawn by the circuit. With that said, i didn't notice any difference when i switched, except i no longer have dropouts.

It may be that the sound differences between running the SB wired and non-wired will vary from one situation to the next.

I know that I've had some problems with some sort of RFI coming through my SB2.  Some of it may have been generated by the SB2 display.  But Vinnie suggested (and Wayne agreed) that some portion of it was likely wireless interference.  I don't have a long enough ethernet cable, so I haven't tried to run mine wired yet, but most of the problem seemed to clear up once Wayne treated the unit with some ERS shielding.

Anyway, some people find the display creates some RFI, and some are lucky and don't have that problem.  Or, more likely, everyone's display creates some RFI, but it's audible in some systems and not in others.  Similarly, I presume that some people will have the wireless interference problem and others won't.  It just depends on the environment.  But if this is all true, then anyone may find it worthwhile to run the test:  if it works better wired then you learn something; if it doesn't make a difference, then you're a lucky sonofa-something-or-other.
