My flexi plan was to basically copy the Mapleshade rack.

2" thick maple shelves, with 3/4" or 1" threaded rod at all 4 corners.
I don't think it would be too light....

I just like the look/sound of the thick maple shelves

I've had a variant of this since 2000, but I used cheap 1" MDF ... mebbe upgrade in the future :green:

It is quite heavy, probably 70 lbs, even with the "thin" shelves.

Jon,

Looks nice and sturdy.
I have a Scott 350 tube tuner too - very nice piece.

Maybe I'll do Maple for the top and bottom with MDF for the middle shelves.
I can swap out the MDF shelves for maple as I can afford them - not a bad idea.

Hi Brad, that little 350C sounds even a bit better than my Denon ... It was pretty grody when I got it, but the price was right, i.e., free.   Scott made some nice gear :thumb:

The MDF is very strong... absolutely no sagging even with 60 lbs of amps up top.  It looks fairly respectable with a nice coat of paint, especially when not dusty.  But some day I will get some proper hardwood.  The associated nuts are more expensive than you may expect.  I have bridge-grade steel hardware and was told that (if not misappropriated) it would be >$75 worth.  Of course, those 3/4" nuts and bolts would support hundreds of lbs of solid-steel shelves if desired -- total overkill ;)

Brad, this is precisely what I'm doing!  I bought four 24" x 15" x 2" maple butcher blocks from Tony's Woodshop (awesome prices, btw) and am doing a flexy.

The wood is here...just waiting on the hardware!  Should be pretty awesome, I think / hope.

Got some pricing from Tony - very quick response - looks like he does excellent work as well.

I was also poking around ebay and came across a guy selling butcher blocks made from reclaimed maple from a 200 year old barn.  The wood has a real character to it.  I sent him an email hoping he can make me some shelves to size.  I like the idea - both of reclaiming the wood - and having shelves made from trees that were around before the Revolutionary War.  Talk about 'break-in' already completed

I want to make a public: thank you!  to arthurs for allowing me to pick up his VTI rack. Goes great in my bedroom, the cherry matches my furniture perfectly.

Can I inquire as to how much you paid?  This is exactly what I would want, and I'm even within driving distance from Tony's.   :thumb:

Second, third and fifth Chris @ timbernation.com on wood racks.  I had him build all my placks that I made racks out of.  He is a great guy too.
