Tube Pre Amp
« on: 20 Oct 2006, 10:21 pm »

Hello!

I was looking to get some input on a tube Pre Amp. I am looking in the $3000 up to $6000 range. What is the best thing going in that range?

Choice would have to include what you are using it for.  Do you need phono or just volume control/source selection? Do you need to boost the level of your sources (very unlikely nowadays)? Is you amp tubed or solid state?

Right off the bat I would say you are overshopping.  A tube pre-amp (excluding phono) is just a voltage gain stage usually connected to a low impedance output stage (90% of the time a cathode follower.) There is only so much that can be done with this configuration and not a lot of room to cut costs. Truth is a $600 unit may well sound better than a $6000 one.

If you want to 'flavor' a solid state system and don't need gain:

If you want gain with 'flavor':

About a 'cost-no-object' as I would go:

http://www.audionotekits.com/line.html  It's a kit but pay someone to put it together and you  are still below $2K with a circuit that has more engineering in it than the highest priced CJ.

If you need phono, I would go with the AN as well.

What amp are you going to match it with?

This  2 piece Wright Sound AU-1500 is just wonderful sounding, and at $2400, a relative bargain. In fact, the only pre that I've heard that sounded a little better is the Viva Linea 45, but it runs over $9000 with the outboard power supply. I have the Wright WLA12A, and it's a giant in its own right at $900.

George builds some really nice tube gear- and has been for more than  30 years now.

The Dodd battery preamp is causing quite a stir.  It may take a while to get delivery, but it could well be just what you are looking for.
